Four friends stayed at Une Noix (Unno-wa) Inn for a night. The stay was marvelous (room reviewed separately) and the food was phenomenal from start to finish. For the winter season, the meal included individual shabu-shabu pots where you cooked pieces of beef, pork and vegetables in soymilk. But what made it so amazing was the dipping sauce: not your usual sesame, but instead featuring the omnipresent local crop - kurumi (walnut). Incredible! (Unfortunately they don't sell bottles of this sauce or my luggage would be full! The multi-course evening meal included sake and ume-shu, too. Other parts of the meal were local salmon, which is a cross with trout so they say it is less oily; I'm not sure about that but it was amazing. There were multiple mushrooms on the plate, and assorted other veggies. Desert was a marvelous concoction of ice cream, mocha, local berries, adzuki and more. If dinner wasn't enough, the breakfast was equally outstanding. Fish, salad, a blueberry type of smoothie, homemade tofu, soup and more. But what made the meal stellar was the service by the innkeeper, who will answer any question and tell you not only about the food, but also the history and culture of the Unno area. Delightful meals in a warm and welcoming setting: who can ask for more?

we were taken to this restaurant by a local family. The tonkatsu choices included different types of pork from lean to more fat. It was delicious! The panko crust was crispy and not oily. The pork was moist and tender. Sauces included tonkatsu and mustard. The restaurant is probably not one that many foreign tourists would know about or visit but I just wanted to show my appreciation to the restaurant for the food. And if you happen to be in the area, stop there.
