We did not know about this onsen / cafe until it became a necessity to find a place to have dinner.Due to a misunderstanding we were left with no prospect of eating at all. So we asked management if we could be driven somewhere to eat.We actually were staying at a 4/5 star ryoken / onsen in Araragi and the staff seemed inflexible and couldnât even give us room service. So eventually we were driven to a place totally unknown to us, to be fair arranged by manager after some persistence on our part.As soon as we walked into this barn like cafe looking very much like a western movie outpost general store, we were greeted like we were family .We chose rice bowl with egg and chicken and beef curry with rice. Both dishes were accompanied by pickles on the side .The food was homey and comforting and tasty.Top marks for showing hospitality and friendly service. We were happy to have had dinner and will always remember how accommodating the owner staff were. We will return to try the onsen.

Visited this place rather spontaneously. The night before visiting, the reviewer was flipping through Lonely Planet and lo and behold it mentioned these Edo-period post towns. Since Magome ï¼é¦¬ç± ï¼ is said to have a steep slope to climb as you go through town, the reviewer decided to save himself the trouble and opted for Tsumago ï¼å¦»ç± ï¼in which this restaurant is located. Well... that, plus the fact that Tsumago is a very cool name... literally translated as shoving (whose?) wife into a basket... (Magome, on the other hand, only means horse basket --- which makes you wonder: how big are those baskets?!?!)After the sightseeing is done, the reviewer needed a late (about 1:30pm) lunch and opted for a more modest soba place than the restaurant next door (serving lunch sets). The cold soba was very good. At about 1100 yen, it would be a bit more than if getting the equivalent in major cities, but this is amply compensated by the texture of the soba noodles here (dense, smooth texture) and the green tea (came from a boiler -- looks like tea leaves). The dining room leans towards the simplistic side. Service was affable, though instead of English you may have to point sometimes too. An understanding of kanji will at least get you some way into the Japanese menu. Noodles were served within 10 minutes. All in all, everything from ordering to paying the tab could be done in 30 minutes. That's good timing if one was trying to pace oneself for the (few) public buses (only about 5 per day) from Tsumago back to Nagiso JR train station, so that you can then catch another train headed out of the Kiso Valley area into the cities. (It works as a day trip, even if you have some baggage with you. Coin lockers can be found at Nagiso JR, though only for small and mid-sized ones. You just need to time yourself for the few buses -- walking from the JR to the town is a bit far...)

Great restaurant in the beautiful Tsumago! Try the local "beef barbecue", it's incredible! The owner speaks fluent English, Italian and Spanish!!
