Mulranny Food Guide: 6 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Mulranny

October 8, 2017 Russell Mellin

Mulranny (Irish: an Mhala Raithní, meaning "the hill-brow of the ferns")—sometimes spelled as 'Malaranny', 'Mullaranny', 'Mullranny' or 'Mulranny'—is a seaside village on the isthmus between Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay in County Mayo, Ireland. Mulranny is the home of colourful giant Fuchsias, Ferns and exotic plants. This plant life is celebrated each summer during the Mulranny Mediterranean Heather Festival. Mulranny has been cited as a possible source of the ancient Gallowglass MacNevin family, who originally emigrated to Scotland in the mid 10th Century. The Nevin Coat of Arms has a Fern as a main symbol.

This was my second visit to Kelly's Kitchen, a handy establishment to stop by while cycling the Greenway. It is a very cozy (i.e., small!) restaurant but service is speedy so it is not a long wait for a table and the food makes the wait worth it!
On my last visit, I managed to land a table outside and thoroughly enjoyed the most delicious vegetable soup and brown bread. This time I got a table inside and ordered the chicken Sandwich with bacon. Mindful of the time since I had a shuttle to catch, I was a little worried that it would take a while to receive my order but there was no need to worry. A delectable Sandwich with a tasty side salad was placed in front of me before I knew it from the lovely waitress. I only had time to eat half the Sandwich and took the rest to go, which I enjoyed later in Mulranny on a beautiful grassy hill overlooking the ocean.
I highly recommend Kelly's Kitchen for wonderful food, served quickly at reasonable prices.

Had dinner here with family members. We had a reservation and got a table immediately.
The menu had many offerings to suit all tastes. We shared the nachos and the wings for starters. Both were large portions and sufficient for sharing. For the mains, we tried the baked cod, the fillet steak, a chicken curry and the monkfish and jumbo prawns. All dishes were very well presented and the food was of a high quality and delicious. The staff were very attentive and helpful and were buzzing around the place.
The owner dropped by to see how we were enjoying our meal. This was a nice touch and made diners feel that their custom was appreciated. If the customer is satisfied and enjoys the experience then a return visit is highly likely. Here’s one customer that will be back!!

The Greenway Cafe

We stopped in Mulranny for a quick planning session before heading out to Achill Island. My mother noticed a sign for a little cafe tucked around the corner, so we decided to stop in and have some coffee while figuring out our next few hours. Turned out to be a cozy little shop with delicious homemade pastries and drinks, and even had gluten free options available for my mom.
The real treat, however, was the owners; they are an absolutely charming couple, very friendly and attentive. The husband took time at our table to talk to us at length about the history of the area and its families, Ireland in general, and recommendations for where to go on the island (and a good handful of fascinating stories and amusing anecdotes).
It's tucked out of the way, so you'll have to look sharp for it, but it's well worth stopping in for a quick bite or a cuppa. Can't recommend highly enough.

We arrived in time for morning coffee and my husband couldn’t resist the ginger cake as it looked so good. He wasn't disappointed. After our visit to the park and visitors centre we were ready for lunch. My husband had the homemade soup and I had the panini; both were delicious. The friendly service was very good, and we were struck by the way the family (I think it was) worked so well together. We enjoyed looking at the gallery as well.
