We stopped here a little later in the morning and their inventory was down, but we still had fantastic apple turnovers and a glazed donut that would send your blood sugar skyrocketing!

There are too many attractions to see all in one day, but there is something for everybody. The grounds are rich with native plants and tropical cultivars, from breadfruit to cacao, 'Ōhi'a lehua to Brasilian coral. The free range chickens, in exotic varieties, are endless...MoreAloha! I apologize for not responding sooner! Mahalo for your descriptive review, and for noticing that we aren't 'just a coffee shop' (although the coffee is pretty amazing too). Thanks so much for taking the time to write. We appreciate your support! -Jeanette

Honi Wai cafe specializes in hand crafted beverages, soups, sandwiches, and desserts. Every salad is made with fresh local, organic produce. We have daily specials. We also have delicious Hawaiian food.
Honi Wai is fairly new to our part of the Big Island. Family-run, it has a real home atmosphere with elegance and class. Ownership offer warm Aloha to diners. The cuisine is ono-scrumptious, specializing in Hawaiian-style dishes. If you are unfamiliar with Hawaiian-style eating, then you must try HoniWai for a unique experience. My wife and I are very familiar with most eateries on the Eastside, so we are delighted to now have this friendly, immaculate, taste of Hawai'i in our neighborhood.

Food Kiosk that serves local style food, snacks and ice shave.
If you're traveling south from Hilo, on your way to Volcanoes National Park, you might want to check out this quaint little food truck in Mt. View. The owner is super friendly, and there's a large variety to choose from, considering the size of the place. If you get there early enough, you must try the laulau plate. It is the best tasting laulau on the island. There's burgers, chili, noodles, plate lunches, all sorts of homemade pastries (I had an apple turnover. Very flaky, and reminded me of my Dad's homemade apple turnover.) and one of the best shave ice on the island. This one is a tad above fluffy, and shaved pretty much to my liking! Prices are very reasonable!

I live nearby so pass Verna's often. When we have been digging bananas, clearing guava's, working hard , and are starved, 'dis is da place. I get the veggie sandwich, it is a huge sandwich with sprouts, lettuce carrots, tomato, cucumber, and probably more. Plus mayo. Comes with mac salad or fries. Fills me up every time. The other selections are good too, bit this is my favorite.
