While Venice’s mainland suburb of Mestre has a history and character all its own dating back to medieval times, it owes its growth and fortune to its more powerful offshore neighbor. Unfortunately, it’s everything Venice is not: modern, industrial and cheap. But while they may not compare to the romantic canals of Venice, Mestre does have attractions of its own, including the Torre (Tower) dell'Orologio and the Duomo (Cathedral) di San Lorenzo, located on its town square, Piazza Ferretto.

Situated in what was once the army's kitchen, it's an informal yet very well-finished restaurant, with a rich and selected menu at a smart price. The offer varies from top quality meats to seasonal vegetables. Choice products are selected from Slow Food a
In the middle of an ancient fort, located on a natural water reserve. The place is very young and easy-going. I found this place on the TripAdvisor website and the reviews looked reasonable but once there I was beginning to wonder if we had found the right place. It is a basic cafe with some outdoor seating. It was still fairly early when we arrived and there was a list on the specials board and we were advised that only paella which my husband chose., I asked about spaghetti and was told what was available on the menu and I opted for carbonara. OK I can concede that since it was a Sunday perhaps a full menu would not be available.I had water and my husband had a glass of wine while waiting for the food.My husband said the paella was good although not a huge portion. My carbonara was not huge either and, quite frankly, I can make better at home. However the bill at around â¬20 was not large.
