This is not a pretenious restaurant. It is an OSTERIA in the classic sense. Many photographs of the family who run it.....of the town ...which is really a small village off of a back road and not all that easy to find. Surprisingly, the menu is in both Italian and English and the daughter of the owners...a very lovely young woman speaks perfect and charming English. She has travelled to Ireland, England, etc. many times. On this beautiful spring day with travelled the new road to Bologna and arrived there in less than one hour's time. The steak is fantastic! Homemade pasta and fresh and delicious vegetables and not a chicken nor fish to be found on this menu. It is rustic and reasonably priced. We sat and enjoyed looking about at the photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and James Dean...a carry-over to earlier times when the owners must have enjoyed this era. This is not an adventure type place...just a lovely idea for a lunch in the afternoon that is a bit off of the well-travelled path. We loved it.

Hidden away on a dusty back road, this restaurant deliver great regional dishes in a very pretty setting. Porcini fritti, zuppa verdure, pasta with ovuli mushrooms, tortellini in brodo - all very tasty, served quickly and in decent portions. The wines were also very drinkable and the service quick and helpful. In the area this is a great choice, and offers a fine view from the terrace tables as well. Will dine here again in the future. Only weak point is the bread offered, which could have been something more interesting like sciaccata instead of simple white bread.

GENERAL STUFF: An unplanned find, but our experience was excellent at this local and extremely price conscious mountain restaurant in the Appennines. Very cheap bill for excellent food.We were too early in the season for our chosen lunch restaurant, so we looked for what was nearest and open. Hallelujah for Ristorante l'Appenino, where we ate well with a mostly Italian clientele. LOCATION: It's on the bend of a hill approaching Firenzuola, and would be easy to drive past. CLIENTELE AND WHEN TO VISIT: It was filled with Italians, including local workers. We were there for lunch.ATMOSPHERE: This is a warm Mom and daughter, and perhaps even granddaughter restaurant. The atmosphere was very much that of a successful family business.DECOR: It's clean, and has been recently redecorated to a good standard. Light colours, and subtle table dressing. FOOD: This was 'casareccia' cooking at its best. Momma prepared and cooked all, and daughters worked the tables. Starter, main course and dessert were all excellent. Locally produced wine was on each and every table. We had a juice and a prosecco at the bar while waiting for the dining area to open. And at the end, the bill for more than a three course lunch was â¬60 euro. For the quality of food, and also the setting and atmosphere, this was an unbelievably generous price. Generous portions, kind welcome and no fuss. The best of Italy. The veal chops were astoundingly tasty. FACILITIES: Everything is spotlessly clean in Momma's kitchen, bar and bathrooms. WOULD WE RETURN? Yes. We would make our way to eat there. This would be an easy and scenic day trip from Florence. No wonder Eric Newby fell in love in the Appennines.
