The location is great - right downtown. The service was excellent, though perhaps that's because we got there early and there was only one other table with customers. But the best part - the pad thai was excellent. I will definitely be eating here again!
Thai Chef is a neat, unprepossessing little restaurant in a small strip mall. Service is both personal and personable. A wide variety of fresh ingredients, particularly vegetables, are evident in every dish. Yet for all the effort and dedication, Thai Chef does not quite reach the pinnacle.Tom Yum soup (with tofu) unduly relied on vinegar to provide flavor, and other dishes -- the Pad Thai (bland), Pad Kee Mow (billed as hot, yet surprisingly mild), and Gai Yang (described by the eater as "not memorable - I can't remember what I ate") -- ultimately failed to deliver flavor.Service was attentive, and my lack of enthusiasm is personally painful because the pride of the server (owner?) and her effectiveness was notable and worthy of better. This was lunch, so expectations should probably be lower. Yet with the fresh ingredients in use, everything was disappointingly flavorless. It may be convenient if in Oregon City, particularly if using it for take out would be nice because one's personal flavoring/condiments could be added. Absent a repeat visit with better results, this hardly qualifies as a destination restaurant.
Thai Express has become our go-to place for exceptional Thai cuisine in this area -- but particularly its outrageous Crispy Basic Chicken. Apparently they get some complaints because it is hacked in traditional stye -- but we cannot get enough of it. This visit we also had their "Pad Garlic" stir-fry -- also excellent. Previously we've had some other stir-fries, the odd but tasty Thai sausage dinner, their larb (more of a plated version than a wrap), and the fried squid appetizer. All good. I was not impressed by their curries, as they were rather thin. Their Thai coffee is also excellent. The place is tiny, in a mall next to a Dollar Store, utterly unpretentious -- and absolutely worth patronizing.
