Great find in a residential Oakland neighborhood. We stumbled across Champa Garden while wandering our Atlas Obscura world over the weekend. Had about a 20 minute wait on an early Saturday afternoon. The space is small and pretty tight. But we squeezed over to our 2 top and had a sit. Started with the Nam Kaow - excellent lettuce wrap appetizerPanang Curry - I would have preferred to add pork to this dish, but they had a run on pork and were out, so we opted for beef. I told our server that I wanted it Thai spice hot... He looked at my alabaster white boy skin and smiled, like I was nuts... I told him it was ok, so long as it is not molten hot, I can take it. . . Yes, it was hot...The spice was perfect... and the flavors were probably the best Panang I have ever experienced. Again, I think the pork would have sealed the deal on this dish.Pad hin Ma Parn - I think this dish was 'good' ...BUT the excitement of the Panang overshadowed the more mild flavors here. Finished off with Thai Fried Rice with chicken which was very flavorful and perfectly prepared. The only downside to the evening was the service. We had a very young server, and after our appetizer was completed, they brought the Panang, and then nothing else... no rice to put with it, and no other dishes. We waited quite a long time, and then finally got up and went over to the counter to ask where the rest of the dishes were. We were told it was very busy and the kitchen was backed up... Well, then hold off serving just one incomplete dish and leave us hanging with no follow up or explanation. Then, we had to wait a super long time to get the check, and then the server never did come to get it. I ended up going up to the counter to finish paying. So, because of the service issue, I can only give a 4 star rating. But, YES we will definitely be back to try other dishes... or get my Panang with pork next time.

The Background: I live in Alameda and I order from here often. I went last week again and thought I'd review it. The Good: Passable to good Thai food. I originally found them through eat24 before I realized they were just around the corner. I have eaten here once or twice a month for the last two years, about 90% of the time delivery or take out. Delivery is free and if you order take-out, you can sit at the bar to wait. They will offer you a glass of water and the wait staff, if not busy, will chat with you while you wait. I have not once had bad customer service here...but what else would you expect when these folks are from The Land of Smiles. I have ate in twice and the dining area is serviceable and decorated with Thai style decorations. The Bad: One time while ordering delivery about 15 min before closing time my favorite dish (chicken praram) was cooked horribly. I didn't kick up a fuss considering the situation and the many successful orders I've had from here. Final Verdict: Good Thai food for a good price with quick delivery and friendly service. I'll continue going here.

tl;dr: the pork larb and mango sticky rice were superb, and drink service (for water) was delightfully attentive.I visited last night with my married friends who have a 100% perfect track record of picking great restaurants at every point on the price spectrum. Their record remains unbroken. I don't seek out Thai restaurants in America because they use too much sugar. A couple years ago I learned that some Thai places will humor you if you ask for Thai-style Thai food, with more pepper spice and less sugar. Although the waitress looked at me skeptically when I made this request, my larb salad was mind-blowingly delicious, so I'm pleased as can be. After that, we all shared mango sticky rice, which was as good as anything I ever had at fancy restaurants in Thailand. The mangoes were perfectly sweet, ripe and delicate, without even a hint of being fibrous or past their prime. I don't even know where you find such great mangoes in America. They served ice water in charming mason jars with handles, and refilled my water immediately every time it got below half-full. I drink a lot of water and hate running dry; great drink refill service really impresses me.The decor was adequately welcoming; it didn't make a big impression. I noticed that they had several large TVs on the wall; our attention was drawn briefly to the humorously unfocused network TV broadcast of the fireworks celebrating the upcoming Super Bowl football game.

We have had Monkey Thai 3 times in the past 2 months. Having recently visited Thailand, this place hits the mark. All around from tastes/spices, portion/sizes, pricing, and customer service, Monkey Thai is an all around 5 star place.I live 1 mile away (love it) and we have ordered the following:Chicken Satay: Good - peanut sauce has some crunch but medium paste consistency. The chicken was cooked well and was moist throughout. (Falls off the stick)Papaya Salad with Prawns: Good - Dressing was good and not too over powering. Prawns are boiled or steamed and served cold with the salad and are about 20/30 sized or I would say medium. Papaya was fresh and crunchyTom Kah: Great/Exceptional: Coconut soup has the perfect blend of spices, smooth and tangy with lots of veggies and chicken. Very well adapted from my experiences in Thailand.Tom Yum: Very Good: Caveat is I am a huge fan of Tom Kah but the Tom Yum is very good and soothes the belly especially with the spiciness of the soup and the sour/tanginess. Lots of veggies and tomatoes. Pad Thai: Very Good - All around solid choice with chewy noodles, pad thai sauce, and crunchy peanuts. A staple.Yellow Curry: Very Good - Spices are blended with the coconut milk and creates a well balanced and savory curry with large chunks of veggies and meat.Crab Fried Rice: Very Good - Chunks of crab and good amount of eggs and veggies mixed with a well seasoned rice.Sticky Rice: Standard - but exceptional when eating with the yellow curry. All around solid meal at a great price. I am going to put in my order in for this place now.

It's been years now that this has been my go-to Thai restaurant. Never disappoints- always fresh, attractive food served by wonderful staff. Love that one of my favorite staff members is now back in the kitchen cooking... And can she ever! Made to order- just the right amount of heat... and the Pineapple Fried Rice... that's the one you can't miss.

They have the best crispy duck dish here! I order it every time. They also always provide pretty quick service, but they get really busy during dinner hours, so come early , especially if you are party of 4 or more. I love their coconut soup as well, and they have a killer pad thai!
