Montebello (Spanish for beautiful mountain) is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, located in the southwestern area of the San Gabriel Valley on 8.4 sq mi (22 km) 8 mi (13 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. It is considered part of the Gateway Cities, and is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. In the early 20th century, Montebello was a well-known source for oil reserves. At the 2010 census, the population was 62,500. The estimated population as of July 1, 2013 was 63,495.

We first tried this place, thinking, ehh - what the heck! It turns out it's the best local sushi place around (maybe that's not saying much for the selection in Montebello but this place is loads better than the sushi place at the mall). Not the greatest ambiance but not bad, either. A little cramped in terms of how packed in it can get. Prices are reasonable and they have a great selection of creative rolls. Dynamite rolls, modified California rolls... plenty of spicy tuna. The noodle dishes (udon) and plates (Korean beef) are also fairly good. The draft beer is great value for money! The sake is also pretty good.

We decided to give this place a shot and we weren't disappointed. The server was nice and helpful. The rolls came out HUGE, filling, and delicious! Not like the other places were you pay $10 and get a tiny little thing, this place definitely gives you your money's worth. The miso was good too!

I was surprised to find this restaurant in the neighborhood. I stay in a local hotel for business and was dropping off dry cleaning next door, so decided to try it. I've been back several times.The restaurant itself is quite small with regular tables and a sushi bar. I go for the sushi bar and order my usual - spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail and egg. All very fresh and very good, every time. The sushi chef speaks limited English but is excellent at preparation and does it very quickly. However, last time, decided to try the sweet shrimp but due to miscommunication, for which I take responsibility, ended up with the sweet shrimp and fried shrimp head. Decided to try it and definitely not my thing but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be great for others.If you do have a fair amount of food, the bill can easily add up to about $35+. However, the product is fresh and well prepared, so worth the cost. Of course, the best sushi I ever had was at 6 am in Tokyo after checking out the fish auction, but this is on the other side of the pacific in a small restaurant off of hwy 60.

If you are in the shopping center and feel like having some Japanese food, this would be your choice. If you are willing to drive 5 minutes, there are many better options. The service is apathetic. The food is o.k., but no better. I think they stay open because it is not part of a chain and fairly authentic, an alternative to the Subway next door, the Coco's across the parking lot and the Hometown Buffet and Denny's across the street. Wahoo in Rosemead is less expensive and serve on real plates.
