Normally we reserve a 5-star rating for only the best meals of our lives. This didn't attain that status but it was certainly the best meal we had in Kumamoto (a 4 star on an overall scale) and excellent. If you want to avoid eating raw horsemeat (basashi) or even cooked horsemeat, which many rave about in Japan, which we wanted to avoid, and get tired of the excellent fish in Kumamoto (we did) then this is a wonderful choice. The choices for excellent food in Kumamoto are slim pickings we found (unless you want horse meat or fish) but this restaurant hit the spot. We were dying for some good beef after 4 days in Kumamoto (and we are not big beef eaters at home at all) and wanted to sample the touted wagyuu beef of the area. We stumbled across Nana by accident and were delighted we did! The beef teppanyaki was amazingly good (we ordered a third set), the tempura vegetables done well, and they had some excellent local shochu alcohol of various types. The ambiance and service were excellent. One of those serendipity finds. Highly recommended if you are in Kumamoto.

I want to live near this restaurant. Fantastic quality ingredients cooked by an amazingly skilled chef. One of the best Kabuto-ni (head of sea bream) that have ever had in my life.

Well, if you are in Kumamoto, and you would like to try something new, you should definitely try basashi (raw horse meat), assuming you can get over the mental hurdle imagining yourself chewing a horse. Unfortunately I did not come at lunch as this restaurant has very reasonably priced basashi set menu. At dinner time you only get to sample basashi pretty much as a "side dish", i.e. small portions. I ordered the akami (the leanest part) and it looked like raw tuna but more chewy. It does go well with seafood don.Dear oyuki-on-the-moveThank you for coming our restaurant. We treats kumamoto traditional foods and Basashi is really famous food in Kumamoto. If you can come back again , please try another part of Basashi (neck , flank) , it is so different taste and texture compare to Akami part. Thanks from HEROæµ· çæ¬é§ åº

This is near where our hotel is and we were looking to try out horse meat since this is something that Kumamoto is famous for. This place has excellent service, but can be quite pricey. We had the shabu set and it cost about Y16,000. Tasted pretty much like beef. Won't be able to tell the quality as it was the first time (and probably my last time) trying.

For this very popular restaurant, make sure you make reservations for dinner during high season. Located right next to the Shimotori Shopping arcade just past the Daiei store, this restaurant may have been reviewed by Zagats. Private tatami rooms available for small groups with wells for you to hang your legs. Food is a little pricey, but presentation is very Japanese and tasty. Menu items include tempura, sashimi, sushi, Japanese wagyu beef steaks, basashi (horse sashimi), local speciality karashi renkon (lotus root stuffed with meat and mustard), yakitori (grilled chicken), ika (dancing squid live squid is sliced into sashimi pieces and retruns to the plate and the legs are still moving), to mention a few. The restaurant has excellent nihonshu (premium Japanese sake) such as Kubota senjyu and Hakkaisan ginjyo. Shochu included premium brand Kuro Kirishima and others from the Kyushu area.
