Things to do in Merida
Peeeerooo.....

The restaurant Lusitania, is a place with large dining rooms and nice terrace. With an intimate and cozy atmosphere. It is in the center of Merida, so it is a good option to enjoy the innumerable tourist offers offered by our UNESCO World Heritage City. F
We had lunch here today (cod, prawns, chicken, meat, oysters). We went to the upper floor which has more high class food and one lady from the staff spoke well english. The chef and rest of the staff were very kind and smiling and explaining all the time. The service was great (the best after a week in Spain). We really recommend it if you like seafood.

Fantastic decoration, great concept. The ultimate respect for the animal is to enjoy its parts on a plate. The idea of combining various traditional foods vendors in one place and making it easy to pick various products of various styles is always good. There might have been more beef items one the menu however an honestly displayed and explained distinction of cow and bull did of course make the cow experience excellent. Though it may seem a little bit slow day that should not be excuse for turning the bæind eye to customers smoking inside, hopefully it was the exception that proofs the rule.

We were walking back from our requisite visit to the Roman theatres and we came upon a chef out in a park opposite this restaurant making a vast pan of Paella. We began talking about it and discussing the ingredients and it looked and smelled wonderful. And he was wonderful. But it was 12:00 noon, the equivalent of the middle of the night for most Spaniards. So I came back later - around 3:00 pm - and dug into an order of the now ready Paella. And it was delicious. Although he had been dousing it with generous quantities of smoked paprika and saffron - not one of my favourite spices - the taste was fabulous. No one flavour dominated the dish but you could taste the delicious, brininess of the mussels and clams which abounded. And the waitstaff were extremely kind and helpful. Try this restaurant.

You avoid rundown, desolate industrial parks, when looking for a restaurant, right? Even if it is only a couple of minutes from the centre of town by car, right? You always want to avoid crowded narrow bars with people stuffing themselves with free tapa's with their drinks, right? So they don't have to spend money on a full meal, in a cosy but noisy restaurant behind a far away ominous looking door, right? You feel that Spaniards in their natural habitat, must be avoided at all cost, right? You are of the arrogant opinion that all foreigners have a duty to the world at large to speak English, right? Lovely! Then we shall never meet in this Méson, which only deserves to serve their lovely, down to earth regional food to those who would have responded to all of the above with a heartfelt "WRONG". Stewed oxtail, delicate pisto, stewed lentils with veg, dried cod and other down to earth, well executed local dishes are on the menu. Good wines, reasonably priced, as well as ample set luncheon choices (at under a tenner incl. drink, starter and desert plus coffee) are a daily item. I schedule my travels in this part of Spain around the times lunch is served here and sometimes I stay in the (good) hotel only a 10 minute walk away. They speak better English than I speak Spanish, but have proven to have a perfect understanding of vinger pointing, thumbs up gestures, rubbing of the stomach and, most of all smiley faces, even if a wrong or misunderstood dish ends up on the table.

Stopped in Merida for 3 nights and ate here every night. Truly outstanding from the reception to the service to the quality of the food and the price. Our spanish is very basic but everything was explained to us regarding the ingredients and the cooking process by our very helpful waiter. Not all the staff spoke English but we dropped on and our host looked after us every night. I wish this restaurant was at every location we stopped in spain!!!!
