This little trattoria hidden in a nondescript house at the edge of the village is a meat-lover's delight. Don't be put off by the very basic appearance of the place; the staff is friendly and the costata (rib of beef -- the house specialty) is terrific. No wonder this place is subtitled "Club amici della costata": the cuts are huge (a kilo each incl. bone), so I was amazed to see some other diners polishing one off by themselves. One costata is more than enough for two, and it's served super-rare on a hot dish, so it keeps cooking at the table; you simply leave it on until it reaches your desired degree of doneness. Yum! For anyone not looking for a meat overdose, there is a sizeable selection of pizzas and homemade pasta on the menu too (the pasta prices listed on the menu are each for two portions, N.B.), and everyone in our party of five was highly satisfied with their choice.Prices are very reasonable, especially if you use their groupon offer, which is a great value at currently EUR 39.90 for two people and includes -- besides the signature costata -- a bottle each of water and decent red wine, a few slices of salami as an antipasto, bread, a vegetable side dish, (mediocre) french fries and a forgettable dessert.

Meat restaurant in merate. You can find all the best cuts of meat in the world and the Italian tradition.
As an american I can appreciate a great-tasting and well-made burger when I come across one, and Donna Burgherita does them good! The lamburger "il Sardo" was a total surprise as I had never tasted such a thing in the states (lamb is not as popular where I come from). Tender, juicy, full of flavor, and the bun to patty ratio was just right. I especially loved the mint sauce that was served with it, and the black bread buns were awesome and something different! Burgers come with either fries or onion rings.Service excellent and attentive, and the ambience is suited to what a burger place should be: casual and comfortable (there's enough space between tables and you're not crammed in like sardines). There is a bit of a wait for the burgers but hey! - this place is not McDonald's.

I ate here a few weeks ago with my husband on a Sunday afternoon. We'd already been here with friends just over a year ago and we kept meaning to go back as we'd eaten very well. Unfortunately this time round we came away with another sensation which was one of sheer disappointment. I just fail to understand why they can't print the menu with prices so I can clearly understand what I'm paying for and if I think it's worth it based on the size of the portion, the ingredients and the skills required to make the dish. We spent almost 80 euros as we were given a small discount due to a misunderstanding and I left quite hungry to be honest. My first course was very nice but the portion was miserable especially since I paid such a considerable amount for it. My husband's starter and pasta were very good but again unjustifiable prices. Then my second course of seabass which was cooked in boiling pan with herbs and served with two sad potatoes tasted more like hospital food. I understand it's a healthy choice and that seemed to be their selling point but I was utterly shocked to find it this dish cost 25 euros when presented with the bill. A baby could have eaten more. I also love simple dishes but if you're asking similar prices then you have to dress up your plate better. It just looked like a sad offering. The couple who run the place are very friendly and the location is nice but I surely won't be coming back as I just feel that I spent a small fortune for a very average meal. We had a litre of water and a glass of wine and no dessert but were offered a little canoncino at the end which was nice but I just felt stung by the hefty price tag.
