Very long wait, no system to notify when it is your turn, loud music, dirty plates, filthy bathrooms, we had to ask numerous time for water. Food is very tasty, and portions are big, The rest needs a lot of improvement. People are standing all over waiting for their turn. The waters are not trained well, when we just set at the table the waiter sprayed cleaner all over the table and our clothes to clean the table, then when taking plates off the table the oil and sauce from food were flying all over us too. We took the remaining food back home and found long black hair on the plate, none has long black hair in our family:( not sure that tasty food overwrite all the filthy moments

The empanadas are delicious. So many choices for vegetarians as well. They are crispy and flaky. The ones I loved were the vegetarian choices of mushroom medley, maduros and cheese and the ricotta spinach ones. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

I really wanted to give Casa Piquin 3 1/2 stars because it is, in my opinion, somewhere between average and very good (TripAdvisor, how about including a "good" choice?). This is a subterranean restaurant that used to be a popular Italian place years ago. The room is showing its age, but Casa Piquin has done its best to create a festive south of the border atmosphere. The service was excellent the night we were there; three different servers were all friendly, helpful, and efficient. The food was good (though true aficionados may quibble over certain of the offerings) and in ample portions. I had tamales and my wife enchiladas after starting with quesadillas. The meals are served with rice and beans. The chips and salsa on the table were quite tasty. It is a BYOB (there is a liquor store a few doors down), and for those who don't know Montclair, parking can be a bit of a challenge. All in all our meal was satisfying. There are other Mexican restaurants in Essex County which are of a higher quality (artisan tacos and the like), but if you find yourself on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair with an urge for Mexican food, Casa Piquin isn't bad.

The current ratings spread is probably a bit unfair, but understandable. A well designed space in a brand new building ... courteous service, albeit a bit uneven, and slow ... good food, but not good enough to justify Manhattanesque prices ($40 for langostinos, $60 mixed grill, $68 mixed seafood grill, etc.) My wife said her mariscada roja was good, but not 40 dollars good ... ditto for my camarones rellenos at $37 and gazpacho at $13. (I can't remember ever paying more than 6 or 7 bucks for gazpacho, even in NYC.) There is substantial potential here, once they smooth some of the rough edges, and bring prices more in line with other restaurants in town.
Puerto Rican food is always a rear & hard to find in this area of NJ. Cocina Candela is a lovely restaurant with wonderful tropical decor & a very welcoming staff. We wholeheartedly agree with the rave review of empanadas, loved the special gazpacho & the mofongo & the chicken "chicharron". We savored the generous pork shank "pernil". The red snapper was also well done although a native mojo sauce would be preferable. The "arroz con gandules" was cooked well but was very bland. We will return.
