We were just arrived in Shima and looking for some quick food we headed to the train station where we thought some tourists like us should be able to find a quick bite. We wandered into a smallish kind of food court outside the front of the station, where there was obviously a bit of life happening. It turned out to be the local Izakaya showing the Japan vs South Africa Rugby quarter final, and it was packed to the rafters with Japanese fans. We didn't actually want to join in the Rugby party, so we looked across the corridor to a quiet seeming joint with just a few tables occupied. After the visit I looked at the only 4 existing Japanese reviews of the place we'd found, named Daikazoku in the latin scrips, and they come across as fair to good, describing a "homely" seafood place.Homely it is. The proprietor described himself, in broken English, as a fisherman who sells what he caught in his restaurant.... I believe that. There's no set menu. You say what you're willing to pay with a suggested start at 2000 Yen. He said that for 2500 Yen we'd also get a shrimp each (one shrimp?, really!)But actually, on our walk in -- with trepidation since it's a pretty plain place, obviously local, and only one or two tables occupied -- we could see the consumed oyster shells piled up on the tables, and that looked good to us!So we said what the hell and ordered the 2500 Yen menu with some beer. Then came a procession of some of the best seafood I've ever eaten. It started with a very very generous sashimi for two, with 3 or four different kinds of fish, including the local specialty of Bonito (Skipjack tuna?) marinated in Soy. The followed about 20 lightly steamed fresh oysters in their shells. Our obviously amateurish attempts to open the oysters with the provided shucking knives drew the attention of the table across from us. One person kindly came across and showed us the knack, ensuring we didn't injure ourselves! We had an interesting broken conversation about Australia and surfing. After the Oysters came two of the biggest prawns that I have ever seen in my life, shelled crumbed and fried. And they were oh so succulent! There was also a few more oysters, breaded and fried, with a tartare like sauce. We thought that would be about it, but then came the stewed fish in soy. I would hazard a guess that it was a piece of mackerel given the light and dark flash, and the slight fattiness, but it was delicious off the bone. After that, another white fish fillet steamed in it's own juices and a bit of lemon, in foil, which was also perfectly cooked, light and tender. There might have been some more veggie tempura in there as well! All of this was fresh and beautifully cooked. 20 fresh oysters in the shell themselves would command a good $60 USD at most city restaurants. The sashimi would also have commanded $50+ USD at many places. Add the crumbed huge prawns, more oysters, two kinds of cooked fish and, seriously... anywhere in Tokyo, NY, SF, Sydney, London, would be charging $200+ USD for this meal for two. And we got it for 5000 Yen (~$48 USD) for two and a lot of smiles and chat thrown into the bargain! The beers were also cheap! You can walk into a hundred dubious restaurants and have very average experiences. This felt like a once in a lifetime meal that we will never have again for such value. I think the inhabitants of Ugata probably take it for granted that seafood should be this way!

Saw a program on our local TV hosted by Japan Hour and they feature this restaurant (in quite a secluded area and need car transport to get there). Decided to give it a try since we were in town and while visiting the tourist sites needed a lunch break and found this place .Mostly frequented by locals and tourists from neighbouring prefectures. No English menu and no English spoken. Just body language and guessing game.Overall very fresh seafood, serve either raw or grilled. Totally enjoyed the lobster served sashimi style ( depending on size cost between 3000y-5000y). The rest of the clams and shell fish were mostly grilled. Service is fast and open during lunch. Give it a try when you are in the Neighbourhood for truly local taste. Look out for the lobster while driving though this is a lobster town.

We dined here 2 nights to try all the different dishes and everything was delicious. I would suggest to take a mix tempura to share and then to go to the counter and point at the many local specialities on display to try as many as you can. Fried fish, squid, octopus, etc all fresh and good. The owner were very friendly and made us feel very welcomed even if we don't speak Japanese.

The town shuts down pretty early, and this place closes early as such. Maybe 9-3. Had fresh large scallop, sea urchin, and raw, gigantic oysters. All flavorful and clean. The place is super cool, a hunter top. the owner is full of life, amazing atmosphere. Open design. Reasonable prices. This would be a decent reason to come all the way back here.

This place features Ama (free divers collecting shellfish) cooking live seafood for you. You sit in the hut around charcoal stove then watch Ama grill seafood in front of you. The course we had consists of Ise-ebi (Ise lobster), scallops, squids, different fish. Food is so fresh but watching cook live made me feel guilty.
