Anton's

We're a unique St Cloud Area restaurant in an authentic log cabin nestled along the Sauk River. We are family owned & operated since 1973.

Let me start by saying the ambiance of this place is superb. Cool log cabin. With the tame ducks outside it’s neat being in the Sauk river which empties into the mighty Mississippi. We were told by our waitress this is the best steak place in St. Cloud. Well, I’ve only been to one another and I have to say Texas Roadhouse has this place best for steak. My NY strip had a MINIMUM of 1/3 to 40% fat on it. It had a nice seasoning but it was tough. My gold standard for a strip is Postmark Grill in Hudson WI. Nobody (apart from the Chicago steakhouses)beats them. This place had a good side salad. The cauliflower au gratin was okay. Their popovers were very good. But looking back, we should have tried the salads or something else as this steak was seriously disappointing. I do sincerely mean that Texas Roadhouse is not only a better value price wise but quality wise. Maybe we caught this place on a off night.

4 for dinner and we were seated quickly and promptly given menus and our orders were taken soon after. We ordered a fried shrimp platter, the four course feast, shrimp potstickers, salads, and tomato caprese. All food that should be served hot was hot and the salads were cold and fresh. My sister ordered the four course feast and she shared her coconut shrimp with all and it was very good. My wife ordered the shrimp potstickers and unfortunately they were too spicy for her taste. I did enjoy them though. The tomato caprese that I ordered as a side was great. The highlight of the meal was the triple chocolate brownie that came with the four course feast.

Applebee's

Went here on Easter Sunday around 2 p.m. Probably was 2/3 full in the restaurant. We had a friendly server. We looked at the menu, which has been continually been tweaked and not what it used to be. You really can't eat under $10, so okay. My kids used to rave about the Quesadilla burger from the Roseville restaurant in the cities. I always get the Oriental Chicken Salad but was feeling like a hot entree this time. So, I opted for the burger. Instead of fries, got the Garlic Mashed Potatoes, which I thought was nice. I like a choice and don't like to do fries, generally. Our food took forever to come out.I felt my plate and it was luke warm. The potatoes were warm and I tried to melt my butter in it. The burger was also lukewarm, so I asked that it be heated up. When it came back, it was warmer but not hot like you expect restaurant food to be served. The quesadilla burger was a mess. The lettuce was slimy, there was no tomato, or avocado, or pico de gallo. There was cheese. The taste of the burger was offputting - sort of like home-made from high fat content meat that was turning. The burger wasn't a patty shape. After a couple of small bites, I decided to send it back. I ordered my Oriental Chicken Salad. The manager stopped over twice to apologize. My girlfriend's burger and fries were okay, and her dessert and Raspberry Lemonade was good. She picked up the check, which was a nice surprise treat! The server brought our bill and looked on for her reaction. "Wow. Thank you!", my friend said. We'd not been charged for either of my entrees. That's how service recovery is done, complete with apology and 'making things right' by the manager.Yet, I don't want to go here anymore, at least for a long while. She's had issues before about cold food, and I just find their latest combinations to be weird. I used to love Applebee's. I don't want bizarre chili sauced chicken nuggets on top of mac and cheese. I want a good steak, or a sandwich variety that doesn't cost $14. I miss TGIFriday's. We'll hit Texas Roadhouse next time instead and pay the extra buck for some good eats. Thank you server and manager, for not making us pay for food that was not up to par.
