Things to do in Ribadesella

Tuesday 28 May, Dinner. We are the only 2 diners. Starter of clams (almejas) - Euro 28. Main of 'kingfish' (Rey) - Euro 72.As with the Emperors New Clothes, a reality check is needed here. This is crude un-adorned cooking being sold at grossly inflated prices. One example of a far better bet is Sibariz where you get refined cuisine at less cost.

This restaurant was one of our all-time favourites on our visit in northern Spain. Their food is really do die for! Fresh, delicious and always served with a smile...and a bit of humour. The staff were absolutely wonderful! We always ate off their fish menu, which was varied and served with yummy potatoes and a salad. A cidre to quench your thirst was poured into your glass from about a metre in the air! How they managed not to spill more than a drop is amazing. We rounded off our meal on two occasions with the most divine cheese cake soaked in whisky!!! The ambience is comfortable and inviting, even in bad weather. This restaurant is a must-visit and we highly recommend it. We ate here almost every day during our stay in Ribadesella. We tried to visit other eateries, but our legs and bellies kept on directing us to Casa Basilio :-)

It would be easy to get sidetracked into other port-restaurant experiences before reaching this marisquaria. It's really different. Fantastic service, excellent wine and really good fish. We had chiperones to start and shared a Besugo (sea bream) which was amazing. Wine excellent and reasonably priced. A really good experience.

Bad service and kept screwing up the orders. Second course served as an appetizer by mistake. Bathrooms were NOT clean.

This is not a "beach restaurant", as some reviewers here insinuate. Yes, it is a restaurant at the beach just beyond the charming little hamlet of Vega, but that is like saying the Empire State building is a building in Manhattan. This is no shashay-up-in-your-flip flops chiringuito. This place offers first class fresh seafood cooked over hot coals simmered all day to impart the perfect alchemy of flame and heat, bringing you the freshest and finest grilled fish Spain has to offer. This is not haut cuisine: traditional Spanish cooking will not overwhelm you with ambitious sauces or fusion spicing. What is on offer is the pure essence of the sea, fresh bounty lightly salted with a touch of olive oil, grilled to perfection and accompanied with a delicate garnish of fresh tomato and red onion. The rodaballo or lenguado or rape will melt in your mouth.

We ate dinner here on our first night in Ribadesella. It is right on the marina walk-easy to find. The crowd was lively as the World Cup game of Spain -v- Portugal played at the bar. We sat in the main dinning room (quieter). We were offered a small (free) creme of fish soup and plenty of fresh bread. We ordered :fabada (Typical large, white bean soup), medallions of lamb wrapped in iberico ham and cream sauce and local cider.I would've given 5 stars based on the food and location alone. Although the secondary wait staff was good and quick, our main waiter was not very friendly or easy to reach.

The tapas portions were very generous and good value. The waiter was polite and helpful guiding our choices. We ended up sharing a sizzling prawns tapa (âgambas al ajilloâ) and a steak washed down with local Asturian scrumpy cider (âsidra â). Excellent restaurant, would recommend it to the hungry.
