We needed a quick beer and feed before boarding the ferry, so booked in here. There was good beer was from Sherwood Mountain brewing in Terrace, and the food was pub grub, but ok. We had perfectly acceptable pizzas, and the price was good. Staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere in one of the few pubs on Haida Gwaii.

Blacktail is a newish restaurant in Charlotte City - very nice patio however one is restricted to ordering drinks and appetizers if you are sitting there - if you want a "large" plate one must sit inside. Good drinks - prices on par with the big city - we ordered the cauliflower appetizer with Malaysian curry - very tasty - not battered at all - steamed first and then grilled. Both of us ordered the salmon dish - beautifully cooked - served with fresh peas - whole and shelled - and gnocchi - that was the disappointment - tasted more like mushy dumplings - did not add anything to the dish...service was very pleasant - but very laid back to the point of forgetfulness - our appetizer dish had been forgotten until we asked about it - it was then obvious that they had forgotten! Fortunately the salmon had not yet hit the grill! Small menu with reasonable prices - worth a return.

On Sunday a lot of the places are closed so we had a peak at 2 of the 3 Chinese restaurants in Queen Charlotte and decided this one looked to have a nice big menu. We were pleasantly surprised at the excellent food and portions. The hot and sour soup was amazing.

Visiting Haida Elder Roberta Olson's home for dinner was a treat....evening started off on the wrong foot....after making a reservation well over a month ago and then confirming with her via telephone some two weeks ago we arrived at the agreed upon time of 615 only to be told by her that she had a very large group inside dining and that there wasn't room and in fact there was another large group coming for a 700 sitting and she wasn't sure if she could accommodate us or not. Fortunately she decided that she could so we came back for 700 and enjoyed the beautiful views from her front yard overlooking the Skidigate Inlet and watching the eagles soar overhead waiting with some other twenty folks. We were seated at a long table along with a large group of sailors from North Vancouver and young folks from Smithers and another large sailing group from the Pacific NW in Seattle. The food was quite tasty starting with a small plate of a variety of finger foods: salmon jerky, dried herring roe on kelp; dried kelp and fry bread. Next came a soup made from halibut and potatoes - a bit like a chowder but quite bland. Our main course came out beautifully plated: a small piece of venison (literally bite size and overdone) with a berry chutney, smoked salmon, salmon, rice with huckleberries and sea asparagus, along with roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes. All very tasty and enough food for me but if you were a big fellow having hiked 20 Kms that day it might not be enough. Dessert was a small square of lemon cake with fresh berries (hard to find), jam and whipped cream - very delicious. Tea, made from dry nettles and mint, harvested locally, followed. One needs to bring one's own bottle of wine or preferred drink. At the beginning we were greeted by Roberta who offered a Haida prayer of thanks followed by a welcome song sung by one of the young women who was also serving. At the end of the dinner this young women sang a number of Haida songs: one of peace, one from her mother's clan, finishing with a happy Haida song....she had a beautiful voice. Food was good and interesting however I am not sure it was worth the $65 price tag pp (I see from reviews that most people paid $60??) coupled with the extra cash for gratuities for the young women who were serving us. We only saw Roberta at the beginning and then at the end as she took our cash. I think it would have been far more meaningful and interesting had Roberta told us a bit about herself and her clan and her history as well as spending time with us telling us about the food: how it was harvested, the preparation, where it came from (like the venison - the islands are overrun with deer - was it from there or???) -- I think Roberta might be getting tired of the revolving door...Roberta has an amazing collection of Haida Art but again it would have been nice if she had pointed out particular pieces - I am sure many of the pieces were carved by well known artists. Having been there and for the most part enjoying it I am not sure I would recommend to folks that this is an absolute must do!!
