When doing a web search for the âBest Fish and Chipsâ in Milton, Ontario, the top three places that consistently pop up (in no particular order) are Golden Fish and Chips, Milton Fish And Chips and Heritage Fish and Chips. Of the three, Heritage is the only chain franchise whereas the other two are mom and pop shops. On Good Friday we opted to go to Golden, not out of loyalty or because it is necessarily better than the others. We have eaten at all three and just chose to order takeout from Golden on this particular day in spite of all three restaurants being relatively equidistant to our house. Golden is located in a really run down, tired old building on the edge of Miltonâs main strip. From the outside appearance, the restaurant has zero curb appeal and looks more like a soup kitchen whose main clientele are the destitute and homeless. The inside decor is just as tired and run down and is in desperate need of a makeover. The wall paper and mismatched random pictures of New York City and boats are dated and remind me of my parents retro 70s decorated basement. They even have one of those old menu boards like an old school truck stop diner, but theirs isnât deliberate or a design choice. Thatâs just the menu board they put up when the place opened. This is a no frills fish and chip place. Unlike Heritage that has a variety of options, Golden serves a handful of fish options. You get it on a Kaiser or without. You get fries or onion rings. There is no seafood chowder. There is no deep fried mushrooms or steamed vegetables or mushy peas. Your options are Deep fried and battered cod, halibut or haddock. They do offer shrimp and chicken fingers but you are not getting salmon or tilapia or basa fillets at this place. Bare bones. Portions (like most of these places nowadays) are a little on the smaller side. Gravy is dark brown and salty and thick like paper mache. Fries are meaty and thick. Batter on the fish is crispy and light. We got 1 halibut and Chips, 2 haddock and Chips, 1 onion rings, 2 gravy and 2 coleslaws (one vinegar, one creamy) and our bill came out to $52. Considering it was Good Friday and every other guilty conscience Catholic was doing the same as us, the wait surprisingly wasnât that long. They werenât taking phone orders and our wait was roughly half an hour and that was at about 4pm. It got much busier by the time our order was ready and the line up was quite long when we left. We brought our order home to eat and am certain had we actually ate in, it probably would have tasted better as it would have been right out of the fryer. This is definitely a mom and pop operation and there were several generations of the family working the front and kitchen on this day. Overall, pretty average and nothing like the giant, newspaper wrapped packages filled with huge slabs of deep fried golden, artery clogging, battered fish buried under heaping mounds of thick cut fries and liberally doused with malt vinegar that I remember so fondly from my youth or more recent trips to the UK. In Milton, I have yet to find a place that can replicate that food memory and probably never will.

I stopped in for their $6.45 lunch special. The restaurant was clean and offered tables for dining in.I ordered the Fish & Chips (Cod) lunch special which was fine @ $6.45.The portion was a good size, the fish batter was crispy, not a lot of flavour, but the chips were not crispy. It's all in the potato and the oil used for deep frying.

Recently I had a very good take out dinner from this local restaurant. I had the daily special of haddock and chips, with mushy peas-reasonably priced and tasty. I had not eaten at this restaurant for some time, as I had been somewhat disappointed with their food, but was pleasantly surprised at my latest visit. Worth a visit!
