Things to do in Hampton
I gave it two chances but found two different rude people. You have to order at the counter and then they bring your food in a plastic bag. The food id okay but the employees are not.

I ordered the Fish n Chips, the fish was two small pieces with very mushy french fries, but what really got us, at the end they charged each of us an additional $3 for the pleasure of eating at their tables, then added the gratuity automatically thus taking away from me the option of tipping based on service given.Find another restaurant.

This past weekend I was preaching at a church in Hampton, VA and my hosts, the Pastor and his wife, asked me what I wanted to eat after church. I said, "I'm in Virginia's Tidewater area and I think I want seafood." They had mentioned all the chain restaurants and I asked, "Don't you have a family-run, locally-owned, "Mom and Pop" place where everyone around here knows where to go for the best food? Not necessarily the fanciest place but the best food, where all the locals go." The Pastor suddenly remembered Anna Seafood and we took off in that direction. This place has some ordinary tables (clean but simple), some plain chairs, and you order your food at the counter, pick it up yourself, and carry it to your own table. But, oh my goodness! I had the Tilapia fried fillets with huge French fries - like British Fish and Chips - cole slaw, and the finest Hush Puppies I think I've ever had in my life and travels. The portions are huge! But I had to try their homemade crab soup. It was ridiculous good! And they have sausage gumbo as well, and a variety of other things. I was really pleased and filled up almost to the point of being ashamed. The price was so right! If you're looking for this kind of thing, I think you'll be pleased also.
Shrimp Shack is good, everywhere else on the Peninsula, but for some reason I came in on a bad a day when the food was terrible. The portion sizes were skimpy and overall the service was lacking. I hate going to restaurants where the people in the kitchen are too busy looking at you instead of preparing the food. Will not be back this location--the others have always been excellent.

Went to Poquoson Seafood Festival to try the she crab soup after seeing an interview on tv. The soup was watery hardly any crab at all. Let the owner know and all he said was I will tell them to stir the pot. The crab we had was good. But we made a trip just for the soup. 17.00 for 2 cups of soup. Just disappointed.Hi ma'am,Unfortunately you contacted a social media account and not the owner after the fact. We apologized for the mistake, but since you did not alert the staff at the festival at the time of the problem we had no way to rectify the situation and could only assure you that we would pass the information onto the festival site.

This was my second visit, and I again ordered the Hampton Eggs Benedict, which add crab to the usual ingredients. We also tried the clam chowder, more of a broth than a cream-based soup but very flavorful. We'll be back!

I have been going to various Surfrider's for over a decade. When still working ate mainly at a Va Bch and Chesapeake location. Live on the peninsula so more often now eat at the Hampton location. Very nice location back in Blue Water Yachts on the Hampton River/Sunset Creek. Had lunch w/another couple on a recent Saturday.Restaurant much slower then typical lunch time during the work week. This location has been open for over 10 yrs but still looks very fresh inside. The large windows facing the water and light colored décor make the place very inviting.I had had fried soft shells earlier in the week over in Va Bch. Not a Surfrider but one of our favorite restaurants, they were fine but as I told the other's dinning w/me they weren't as good as Surfriders. I was looking forward to having them but they were out. None of the fresh fish interested me so I got their fried shrimp. Have had them many times in the past. Have stated in other Surfrider reviews but still swear by them. They are as good as any fried shrimp I have ever had on the east coast. They bread them in house, and I'd guess they are U12-15's. They do serve their dinner entrees during the lunch times as well. If a plater or entrée you get a choice of two sides most lunch dishes you get one side. I got the larger order w/10 shrimp, the other option is 6. I knew I wasn't going to need sides so I just got a side salad as one side and my wife got a side salad to. She was getting a lunch special of fish/chips which didn't come w/a side. My dish came w/two large hush puppies house made and as good a hushpuppy as I have ever had. My wife's fish/chips special looked great. Unfortunately I think it may have not been fried to order. Even though the coating looked great it wasn't crispy. She didn't like that the black skin was still on the pieces. I didn't try it but will say I have gotten their fried flounder platter many times. Have always gotten a very large flounder filet and it was great. One of the others got shrimp like I did but the other person noticed that the clam strips said fresh breaded. All the times I have eaten there never tried them. When I see fresh on a menu I actually am a little skeptical. He asked the waitress and she didn't know said she eats them all the time and they are great but she'd check w/kitchen. When she came back she confirmed they were fresh and breaded in house. I never get clamstrips in restaurants one's I have tried were too boring like Ho-Jo's of the past. Well my friend got them, I trade a shrimp for a couple of them. Wow...fantastic. Lightly breaded, truly fried golden brown. I would highly recommend them or the shrimp and I will be trying them in the future. Our server was excellent. Not hovering but checked and got anything extra we needed. Bringing ice tea refill's w/her w/out being asked. I'm just giving them a break on my wife's fish and chips. They do not take reservations or call ahead seating.

We stopped in here after visiting Fort Monroe. The place is nothing to look at but the reviews on Trip Advisor were so good we decided to try it. The sign on the building is faded, so it was hard to find. But the search was well worth it. I was torn between clam strips and flounder, and our waiter told us that it was Big Fish Friday, so definitely flounder. It had to be some of the freshest, sweetest flounder I have ever been served. And it was truly big. My husband had the fish sandwich and the fish hung over the bun on both ends by 4 inches. The atmosphere was great and our waiter was attentive and very good.
