were staying in hotel next door and decided to eat here on sunday night, place was still busy but service was good- lovely inside and large area outside ( if weather permits)- we had the curry which was great- not too hot and the lamb which too was excellent, the only small issue was NO mint sauce with the lamb- other than that all was excellent

A traditional style award winning bar and restaurant located just outside Westport, Co. Mayo over looking Clew Bay not far from Westport Harbourâ¦.
Made a reservation and would recommend as busy place. Ask for a table in the restaurant part not the bar area (these tables are very small and have stools). Traditional menu, the Mussels were copious and very good. Fish was a little dry though. Good food overall. The Walnut dessert was delightful. Lovely service, barman was very chatty. Wine was good and reasonable too.

We took a break from the seafood we had been enjoying in Ireland and opted for a steak entree and a lamb chop entrée. Both were very delicious, with lovely accompaniments and garnishments. The room is small but comfortable. Service was ok but could have been more alert. We had made reservations months in advance but the couple next to us were walk-ins. Go figure.

This place on the sea frontage at Westport is deservedly popular. It's essential to book a table in the rather cramped dining space but service is speedy and efficient. Everything you might expect in such a popular place is on the extensive menu. My partner enjoyed her scallops and mussels and I enjoyed the home-made fish cakes (with a large fish content!) and my sole as a main course, all very tasty indeed. If you don't mind the noise associated with a very busy, traditional inn, then this is the place for you. Would go again!

We arrived just as 'early-bird' was ending but were assured we could still avail of that option - so we did. A limited 3-course menu included some interesting variations. The hake was outstanding and the free-range chicken very good. An adventurous dessert combined seaweed and liqourice flavoured ice-cream. Not to everyone's taste but worth a try. The wine list was reasonable in length but could have done with a reasonably priced house option. A very enjoyable meal in a lovely location.

This is a very popular and good restaurant. We couldn't even get in the first night, lacking a reservation. We showed up early for our reservation the following evening. We were seated quickly, and service was friendly, pleasant and efficient. Our table was at the back and was cozy, with great atmosphere. We got 2-course Early Bird dinners. We had excellent appetizers of pigâs cheek salad and salmon. Our entrees of cod with chopped shaved asparagus and fried fennel, with baby potatoes was also excellent. My wife's dessert of Buttermilk Panna Cotta, and her tea were very good, as was my very strong coffee (I like strong coffee, but thankfully it doesn't keep me awake or this stuff would have kept me sleepless for a week). This was an excellent experience, and the prices were remarkably reasonable.

We recently spent 10 days in Ireland and I had the opportunity to experience seafood chowder at many locations including Dromoland Castle, Ashford Castle and at various restaurants and pubs; so the competition in comparison was high. The Tavern had the perfect blend of a great base and plenty of stock in the chowder. The taste was rich and it appeared as if I never ran out of fresh seafood in the bowl. Kudos to the chef! I'll come back here on my next trip to Ireland.Dear John W.What praise!!!! and to be mentioned within a very impressive list. Our chef is singing your comments from the roof top. Thank you so much for the lovely review. Hope it won't be too long before we offer you another tasting.....Kind RegardsRuth

We popped iin here on the off-chance after cycling the Greenway (also recommended). Although small, we were early, at 5.30, so they quickly found us a table for 4. What a treat. My wife always has a carbonara, whenever she tries a new Italian restaurant, so uses this as a benchmark of quality. This was 5 star. I has a special lamb in balsamic dish , which was lovely. Everything we had, between 4 of us, was excellent - reserving special mention for the burrata (exceptional) and the fig salad with a cheese I wish I could remember (outstanding). Don't expect pizza - they don't do them. Instead, enjoy great Italian food, a good selection of wines and beer, and excellent, friendly staff. One of the best Italian restaurants we've been to. A reason to visit Westport, despite the traffic!
