Levain Bakery

Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

The best Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie on Earth. This bakery doesn't have many options, but what they do is amazing! Their chocolate is just perfect - not overly sweet, but think and creamy. I thoroughly recommend this place to anyone as this is the best and biggest cookie in the city.

Just a very memorable meal! Service was top notch and unbeatable and the restaurant setting is incredible! Food was also great (though not perfect) and very much enjoyable. They served me two extra complimentary courses. Try the rabbit, it was delicious! ANd def go for the guava desert. The meal just ended on such a high note with a variety of deserts. A huge thank you to the team! For pictures and full reviews, check out my instagram where I have shared my deeper thoughts about each dish: @life_on_a_pause (Ahmad Abdullah)

I grew up near the original Ralph’s ice. You rode your bike and went with friends. Every flavor ice was just as delicious as the next. Then they made quarts to go. Then they expanded. I say come to Naples Florida...you could have a thriving business, hands down!

Bellvale Creamery, by far, is one of the most decadent and indulgent true ice creams available. After their recent renovations, the line moves much more quickly. A local favorite and a must stop for travelers. Fresh, inventive and one of the most spectacular views in the Hudson Valley.

Rockland Bakery

Specifically, my daughter-in-law, to know what a gem this place is. She and my son flew in from Seattle, and after that first hot, fresh bagel straight off of the oven, she had me bring her back two more times. It's a consumer-friendly industrial experience, where you put on your plastic glove, and pick from bins and racks of the freshest, best tasting baked goods you ever ate. I've heard from many restaurants in the area that their breads, served next to their signature dishes, come from Rockland Bakery, and it's no Wonder (yes, pun intended!)

I plan on visiting more frequently, and not taking this wonderful place for granted any longer.

DeStefano's Steak House

DeStefano’s was established as a tribute to the DeStefano family and all those families that made the borough of Brooklyn and the Williamsburg community a great place to live. Our goal is to pay homage to the simple values of faith, family, and friends that are evidenced by the strong sense of unity in the Williamsburg community. It is with great pride and pleasure to serve nothing but the best of what life has to offer and to share with our guests a piece of Brooklyn’s history, as well as our own. So sit back, relax, and enjoy your dining experience. You’re one of the folks.

From the moment we arrived (reservations were made) the exceptional service remained genuinely welcoming. Thank you, Joy!

Moving on...
I have indulged at least once a year and splurged for a proper steak at few staples but wow, this was a treat such a treat for my palette.

The filet mignon and porterhouse (for two) were absolutely delectable, cooked perfectly (medium). The kids were impressed with how tasty and "not chewy" it was We took notice, Joy neglected the steak knives, but we didn't require them. The steak was like butter, really!

The appetizers and sides ordered were all delicious, with the exception of the crab cakes. Who comes to a steakhouse for seafood anyway? The creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were amazing. The string beans w/ pancetta were fabulous. The asparagus wrapped in bacon was so good, even the kids consumed them.

We anxiously await the next visit to try other cuts of meat. WOW!

This fantastic establishment in downtown Port Chester offers a wide array of freshly baked items ( breads, muffins, scones, croissants, pies, cupcakes, cookies) PLUS delicious homemade soups and salads and sandwiches and a lovely salad bar. There are ample tables for dining in, too. Service is friendly and attentive. Definitely worth the drive from Westchester and lower Fairfield County.

Matthew's Italian Restaurant

Reviewed By reenie532 - Passaic Park, New Jersey

Short version: Matthew's deserves all the five-star reviews it has received.
Long version: I'm not from Jersey, but have grown to love it here. Well, North Jersey to be clear. Part of it is the southern European enthusiasm for food - Italian, Portuguese, not foodie stuff - although plenty of that - but the ability to take a concrete block of a nondescript building next to a state highway with a sorry excuse for parking and turned it into a fabulous place to have a meal through energy, enthusiasm, great cooking and a desire to do good for people by feeding them well. The night a friend and I arrived for a late dinner on a lousy weather, mid-week evening in early February, Matthew's, a smallish restaurant, located in a nondescript building next to a major interchange off Route 3 in Clifton was filled to the brim. We waited a cheerful 15 minutes as a hostess brought us each a glass of wine as we sat in the cramped wait area, accompanied by a passed hors d'oeuvre, and updated us about the wait, swung by to chat with us and other patrons who were waiting - in short, even though we weren't yet seated, we were welcome and included. At the table, the owner, Matthew, who I was told is there almost all the time, stopped by to say hello and welcomes us as new patrons - obvious since so many of the other ones addressed him by name, including the two cute kids with their father sitting at the table next to us who told us openly that when mother has to work late, they love coming to Matthew's. Don't misunderstand, this isn't a diner - this is white-tablecloth, candle-in-the-center restaurant, but it still has the feel of a happy, family, good China, Sunday dinner kind of place. The place is intimate, but alive - people eating, conversations happening, wait staff helpfully serving and advising. And the food was great. Well-known Italian, but good Italian. Not fancy, but the pasta fresh, light, not sticky or starchy - the veal marsala - or as the menu lists it - vitello marsala - so easy to mess up - was excellent. Eggplant rollatini - another one of my favorites, fortunately was soft, but not soggy and the ricotta smooth and creamy, the eggplant not bitter (yea for that extra step!!). Some people may think that writing vitello and pesce and zuppa on the menu is a bit over the top - why the fancy/shmancy names? - but it reminded me of the way that so many immigrant families (including mine which is not italian) tie their family heritages together here in north jersey - nonna says zuppa, tony jr says soup and whether it's polish or hungarian or portuguese - you blend the home country with the jersey suburbs and whether here or there, it's about comfort, about home, about family, friends, fun and great food. Matthew's Italian Restaurant nails it.
