Jake and Chet's Cafe

The chicken dinner was great and included a trip to the salad bar and a cup of potato green bean soup. However be prepared to wait for at least 20 minutes as the menu stated because it was fresh chicken not some frozen precooked and finished off chicken. Unfortunately it took a lot longer because I saw only one waiter for two dining rooms and it was busy for a week night. But I wasn't doing anything else. The potato green bean soup was excellent. I added some shredded cheese and bacon bits (not real bacon) from the salad bar. Also no alcohol in the dining room. Food and drinks were available in the Lounge. Not too many real sit down restaurants in town.

Two Blondes Bakery

We found this restaurant on Tripadvisor.com. A small farming community in Kansas where two women started their own business in 2011. They are open from 6am until 2pm on Tuesday through Friday. Occasionally, a grill master friend serves BBQ on Saturday. Extremely pleasant women who do everything themselves and make from scratch as much as they can. I had a biscuit and sausage gravy with two eggs on top. The gravy was clearly homemade and wonderful. Jill had their cinnamon roll french toast. She loved it and admitted it was a little sweet when she added a small amount of syrup. It is a small place with five tables and about 8 stools at the counter. No public restroom but a fun place to stop and enjoy the food and owners.

Only stop here if you need over-produced ice cream. We needed something healthy to eat on a long trip, late morning. The chicken strips were our best choice (riding with a chicken strip addict :-)). The strips were so salty and chemical laden that we could not get the horrible feeling that comes with eating over-preserved and chemically prepared food for hours. We finally cleared the sickening feeling with some spicy beef jerky found at one of the truck stops on our route.

If you have to stop in WaKeeney and are not in need of ice cream opt for the Subway on the north side of Highway 70!

Western Kansas Saloon and Grill

On Main Street in town with plenty of room for customers. Interesting old building. Decor is mixed old items and fits the building. Staff is friendly and nice. The portions were large especially the prime rib and tilapia. Garlic mashed potatoes were fine. I did not like the unflavored canned corn which was the vegetable of the day. Fish was ok. If lived in town would be ok, I guess.

Pizza Hut

This Pizza Hut is located about 1/4 of a mile north of I-70, so very accessible for travelers. Food was good and service was okay. Only complain I had was that the bacon on the pizza was very undercooked.

Stopped in town to drop off a coworker and wanted something other than fast food. We decided to take a gamble and was pleased we did! Fantastic handmade burgers and fries, waffle fries just right! Burgers were medium well and juicy. Great service!

From the outside, Twisters II looks looks unpretentious. Actually, inside is pretty unpretentious as well. Once I bit into their swiss mushroom burger I realized some really good food was happening in this small town restaurant. Typically, I am not fond of burgers but I crave the burgers in this joint. The salads are fresh and crisp and served with ample dressing on the side. My husband had a smothered burrito, which he pronounced excellent. I can't wait to try something new next time I go to Twisters.

Good food and cold drinks are top notch in this surprise prairie gem.

McDonald's

Reviewed By James S - Hemet, California

I don't need much food when doing long distance driving just something to fill me up and get hot coffee and hit the road again. Also usually fairly clean restrooms. I also like doing the survey to get their buy one burger or breakfast sandwich. I like their $1 any size soft drink and the all day sausage muffin for about a buck.
