Found PP on TripAdvisor and phoned from the road. An extremely nice and competent person patiently took my order. When we came to pick up the sandwiches (and use the restroom) we were greeted by a friendly person who insured our order was correct. Back on the road we opened up our lunch which was fantastic. The sandwiches were perfectly grilled and tasty. I can’t remember a better take out experience. Look forward to next time when I can eat in their beautiful cafe.

Grinders in The Dalles is my favorite coffee spot in town.
They feature Stumptown Coffee, which is one of the best tasting coffees in the Northwest. The prices are very reasonable and they have a good selection of styles and flavors. All of the "classic" coffees like drip coffee, Americano, cold brew, espresso, mochas, lattes, etc. They have good blended drinks if you want more of a coffee/milkshake treat. Every once in a while, I spend the $6 on an A-Bomb with 4 shots. It tastes super good, but not sometime for everyday coffee drinks.
Customer service is excellent. They always seem to have the right amount of staffing for the time of day and the drive up has two sides that both move along well. If you see several cars in line, it still usually takes only a couple of minutes. Grinders also has a very nice, small lobby for walk up customers, that way if you are just in the neighborhood (or if it's raining) you can not feel awkward walking up to one of the outside windows. Inside there are a couple of seats. They also have a couple of outside tables.
I recommend Grinders and have never had a bad experience there.

They made my wedding cake and to this day I still have yet to taste a better cake. They have a good product supplied by friendly people with the small town manners, friendliness and charm. Great place to get donuts (don't go to safeway!)

The Cottage Café is a small café owned and operated by the Carrico Family. The Cottage café was purchased in January 2014 by the Carricos and each member of the family and their "extended" family take part in the day to day operations. The Cottage Café specializes in grilled ciabatta bread sandwiches, wraps, soups, and salads. Pita pizzas are also offered and are becoming very popular amongst the locals. The newest addition to the Pita pizza menu is a mouth watering Thai Chicken pita pizza. Also offered are "on the go" breakfast options and specialty coffee. The Carricos are an active family that thrive on sports and the active life style. The Carricos are huge Portland Timbers fans but want Sounders Fans to know that they are always welcome at the café. The Carricos like to spend their winters on the mountain; participating in skiing events. The Carricos take pride in the freshness of the food they offer; slicing meats and cutting vegetables daily.
Four of us visiting from out of state rode our bicycles from Hood River to The Dalles. By the time we arrived the idea of lunch was dominating our thoughts. Thankfully we found the Cottage Cafe and it didn't disappoint. We all really enjoyed our...MoreThank you for paying us a visit on your trek from HR to The Dalles. We stopped in for lunch. The choices were varied. I tried the fresh Dungeness crab sandwich as a splurge and my husband tried the French dip. They make their own bread on premise. The crab was plentiful and tasty. The prime rib was tender. The French roll was soft not crusty. The au jus was flavorful. My husband enjoyed the clam chowder and shared my French fries. Portions were large. We were too full to try dessert; we were told these were made in house as well. Prices were on the higher side but we felt it was worth it.

I thought this would be a healthy place to eat but the smoothies and some of their coffee drinks are made with a milk base made from artificial ingredients. The menu is limited and not much for vegetarians. I love the garden patio setting though.

Worth finding, Momma Jane's is a gem of a breakfast place. The character of this restaurant is wonderful. Unique coffee cups, upbeat waitresses, and delicious food. I ordered eggs and hash browns with marble rye toast, and link sausage. The best hash browns I have ever had. Another person got the silver dollar pancakes. Delicious. Home fries were very good too. Large portions including the juice! Coffee was good too. Definitely will stop again if in the vicinity. Wonderful Spot!

The best Thai food we've ever eaten.
Stopped here after touring museums in the area. Had a crew of two adults and 5 hungry kids and teens. We love Thai food but it can be hit and miss in small towns. We were pleasantly surprised about the quality and freshness of the food! No complaints about the food at all. Our server was attentive and pleasant. We had a misunderstanding about shrimp in one of the dishes and she had it remade quickly and at no cost. If we are ever back in the area we will return for a visit for sure!

Pizza
We were looking for something local, fun, and not a part of a chain. We found just that in Spooky's. The pizza was delicious. The beer was cold. Lots of arcade games for kids to play while you wait for your food. Food arrived pretty fast too. Only downside was the price, a little in the expensive side but it was good.
