Happy Clam

Reviewed By Portia82104 - Warren, Maine

I went there with my husband recently and we both had a terrible experience. My husband actually enjoyed his pork, but I got clam chowder made with steamers instead of cherry stone or little neck clams. I've never seen this in my life and I've had clam chowders from here to Cape Cod. You don't put steamers in chowder! I make chowder and would never consider it. They were disgusting and I wouldn't eat the soup. The waitress was indifferent, and even though I asked her to take it back because it was inedible and bad, she billed me for it. This resulted in a very low tip -- which we rarely do, so this had to be pretty bad. Also, the mashed potatoes I had were bland. Anyway, we had to speak with the manager about the charge, so my husband went to get the manager. If you have to get the manager, there's already a problem. The manager begrudgingly came over and I complained about the soup being billed to us. He said, "Well you're the first to complain about this all summer." So I said to him, "There's always a first time." What do I care if NOBODY complained about this before (which I highly doubt)? This was the worst clam chowder I ever had and they did nothing to make me feel like my business was worthwhile. They never apologized, and finally the manager took it off the bill but not without making us feel like we were imposing. Too bad. If they knew they were being rated, they should've thought twice about it. I agree with the prior review from Tom that the service is not good and the manager is indifferent. Perfect assessment of this. How can you mess up clam chowder this much? The broth was very thin too, so this wasn't good no matter how you tried. The waitress tried to get me to eat it and I wouldn't because it was making me sick. People should know that this place isn't worth the food or the service. Save your money, go somewhere else. Find a place in Rockland or on Route 1 somewhere instead of eating here.

Had wonderful experience tonight. Started off with monkfish fritters and fried oysters. All were top shelf - hot and well prepared. Hubby had lobster roll and I the pan seared haddock. All were perfectly prepared. The French fries were amazing. For dessert we had blueberry pie and ice cream. Everything was excellent. Server was very attentive and engaging. Expensive but totally worth it. Lovely night to eat outside on their picnic tables. Oh yes, would have loved some sort of bread with mea..

I don't eat eggs (you know, the thing everyone wants to put on a "breakfast sandwich"/)
They gladly offered a substitution (more sausage) or a lower price....nice of them
Baked goods look yummy, too.

McLoons Lobster Shack

Reviewed By nurealam - Northern California

(San Franciscans on a first time ever 11 day trip to coastal Maine between Portland and Bar Harbor. Locating the best seafood a priority (we never got to eat meat during all 11 days!)).
At the end of the end of the road and a peninsula (in fact it's really on an island). Totally great ride out there; beautiful setting; typical lobster shack in that I believe there’s no indoor seating. You sit on the water and if you want a lobster, someone goes and hauls it out of the water. But it’s the lobster roll that gets McLoon’s on to everybody’s list from newspapers to magazines to tourist guides etc. Nevertheless it is sufficiently out of the way that we did not find crowds there + of course you would have gone to see the Owls Head Lighthouse on the way.

The Village Ice Cream Shop

Reviewed By Jen T - Elyria, Ohio, United States

Yummy! I had the rum raisin ice cream and it was fantastic. My son had rocky road and it was great too. They were out of several flavors that my girls wanted, but they settled on other flavors eventually, which is the only reason that they aren't rated a 5. If it would have been one flavor, I'd have let it slide and given the 5, but it was three! They should have erased the flavor from the chalkboard. Overall, a great value for great, local ice cream in Port Clyde.

My family went to Yardbird two days ago for a big lunch treat. The fish sandwich, the fried clams and oysters, and the chowder were outstanding. I mean "outstanding". We've been to all the lobster shacks around here and this place outdoes them all. We are just trying to wait a day or two to return. We didn't try to lobster roll here however. This is one of those places you must try if you are in the area!

Jameson Point Lobster Company

Reviewed By sadler8613 - Kiawah Island, South Carolina

This place just opened 3 weeks ago. The owners Jonathan and Julie Murphy are lobster people and renovated an old gas station/repair shop into a delightful local restaurant. It is right on the main road . Very clean and bright. The are very friendly and serve a small selection of seafood (lobsters, claims, etc. ) plus drinks and ice cream. They also have local breads and other items. The tables are benches and you can eat in or out on a deck. Take out is also available. The renovations are really nice and well done. It is the only restaurant in Friendship besides the general store. 2 lobsters, 2 soft drinks, and 2 ice cream cones came to 30 dollars. What a bargain and they are cooked right next to you on the deck.

What a beautiful setting for a lobster lunch! Parking is impossible but if you can find a space you'll be tempted by the large outdoor setting of the Dip Net...lobsters in bathtubs and Maine chic adorn this summer site...choose the shade seating if available. I would skip the lobster dinner ...after a very long wait came underdone potatoes, cow-grade corn on the cob and overcooked lobster all for $25 (lobsters were selling in the attached general store for $5.69!). There are plenty of other lobster shacks in the area that blow this place away....but I won't tell you where they are!
