We visit friends in Shenandoah every couple of months and we always eat lunch at El Porton. It's very good and authentic Mexican food. I always have the El Porton burrito and today we had the sopapillas with ice cream for dessert and it was delicious. For three entrees, two appetizers and two sodas it was $43 so it was very reasonably priced. Can't wait until we come back!

This place has the best doughnuts! The atmosphere is a step back in time, back to the time when ppl took pride in what they made. And you can definitely tell in every delicious bite!

This was my second visit to the Harbor Cafe. My first visit was for lunch and this time was for dinner.
The cafe is the hub of this small town and offers meals as well as small grocery items and a meat market.
The meals have been good with prices that match. Both times I have visited, I've had a sandwich and a cup cake.
The service and atmosphere have been good each time as well.
Give this small town cafe a try.

Mrs SmellyOldGoat and I were camping and bicycle riding in Southwest Iowa. We road the Wabash Trace from Coin to Shenendoah. The ride was nice. The trail is crushed stone. It was soft in a few places because of rain, but a good ride anyway.
In Shenendoah we stopped for lunch. The Mrs had found Depot Deli on the web and we like craft beer. We were late for lunch and we were sweaty and smelly from our ride. We were able to sit outside and the service was good.
We sampled the stout and the IPA. We ordered the Bock. All tasted like they used bad water or that the glasses were not rinsed properly. All three beers had an off flavor which was not pleasant.
I ordered the lunch special - chicken fried steak sandwich with potato salad. The potato salad was industrial. Good enough but not made on site. The chicken fried steak was excellent. Mrs SmellyOldGoat ordered the breaded pork tenderloin. It was good. Not as good as the chicken fried steak, but good. The breeding on the tenderloin was different from the steak. This resulted in the difference between good and very good.
The price was good and the service was good. We liked the food, but the beer should be skipped.

Always a great lunch stop with specials, all homemade, no processed ahead of time at this little gem of a restaurant. Great sandwiches, & save room for dessert, homemade pies & cakes. In the summer great fruit pies. Has been around since 1996, in an old church with neat stained glass windows.
They also are open Friday evenings with specials, prime rib is one of the specials.
Service is always top notch, topped off drinks without asking on several occasions.

A Local Winery shop located a short distance from the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. Features locally made wines and now homemade pizza baked in a brick oven. Large rooms available for large parties, class reunions, weddings, etc. Friendly people.

We stopped here on a Wednesday after visiting the Greater Shenandoah Museum. At first glance we were worried that the food would be your standard freezer to fryer meal but we're super impressed with the fresh home cooked chicken. It was delicious, moist with a nice crispy crust. Service was great. We encountered one problem with a baked potato that was bad inside, but it was promptly and pleasantly taken care of with profuse apologies from the cook & server. Don't let the homey atmosphere or the locals stares scare you off, this was a very pleasant experience.

Little café / diner downtown on main street next to newspaper and show store - great place for breakfast - sat at the counter and had a 3 egg ham and cheese omelet with toast and coffee - waitress was polite and quickly brought coffee and took order. - cook / owner stopped by - said hello - read the newspaper while waiting about 10 minutes for breakfast - listened to the area farmers chat - food was hot and good - price w/ coffee about $6 - a steal anywhere - watched 1939 home movies of the town on HDTV - waitress was very attentive - - just a great place to eat - love it here - do not pass it by

Food is good. Service is good. The only drawback is they wait on one person at a time and sometimes there is a line, but they do a good job of getting you through the line as fast as they can.

Great food with large portions but a bit of a wait. Everything is made fresh to order as orders are placed so it takes awhile to get your food. Sometimes I stop just for the fresh squeezed lemonade.
