The Sugar Shak

I left this dessert experience extremely frustrated. Short of serving very good Edy's ice cream, their prices are a joke. To start, they sell cute little souvenir t-shirts, but you need to spend $30-40 for a short sleeve version. Seriously? A small milkshake that is maybe a 10-12 ounce cup cost nearly $6. And it goes on and on. There is tons of candy options in addition to the ice cream. Also, if you don't spend $10, you must pay in cash. For the prices they are charging, I think they can suck up a few cents of profit to take a small charge. I had $5 in cash, so I had to purchase a $2 bottle of water to make the $10 minimum, which really irritated me. To me, this is a greedy establishment taking advantage of a generally affluent vacation visitor base, and it is really offensive. I respect others desire to enjoy their offerings, but I will spend my hard earned money in a dessert establishment trying to make a reasonable profit.

Food is fabulous, yes a little pricier but well worth it. We had the bay scallops, foie gras, my husband had the steak everything was fabulous.

Atmosphere was a little different since the patio seating is actually on the front sidewalk of the shops, not as romantic as we had hoped but we made it work.

Service was excellent.

Crabby Steve's

Reviewed By RCF2915 - Atlanta, Georgia

This one of the few ocean front bars/restaurants in this area. It is only accessible via the beach for those who do not rent/own in the High Pointe development in Seacrest. It was next door to our beach community and very convenient.
Yes, there is an owner named Steve who comes by to check on the service and help bus the tables. They are all outdoors and have a great view of the gulf. They have a full bar, reasonably priced. The service was prompt and friendly. We at lunch there one day and had happy hour drinks and appetizers the next. All of the food was solid -- no complaints. They even have a kids menu.
The one thing you should know is that the High Pointe resort guests have to pass thru Crabby Steves to get to the beach so get used to seeing paddle boards, etc passing thru.

Caliza is an interesting place. During the day it is the community hangout with swimming pools, bathing houses, and lots of deck chairs/tents. It's a community gem. But at night it becomes Caliza the fine dining restaurant. It's a beautiful place, with completely outdoor dining. Unfortunately, the night our group dined it was a bit chilly, and even though portable heaters were provided, they didn't really keep us warm enough. Aside from the surrounding beauty, the food was just so-so. My wahoo was not fresh and was overcooked, and the rice was crunchy. However, my husband's duck entree was delicious and he said the best he's ever had. The baby gem salad was very nice with fresh citrus, and the She-crab soup was also very good. All in all we had a lovely dining experience, but the food was hit or miss.

It is very rare that I write such a negative review but if you treat customers (esp locals) like trash and serve them over priced food with a surly attitude then you are not going to be in business for the long run. This is the sixth time we have eaten here and it will be our last. We had high hopes as the Destin restaurant has done well in a tough market. Yet over the past 6 months the quality of the food and experience here has gone downhill. The restaurant has a great location and atmosphere but the menu as of late has been limited and uninspired. For such expensive dining you would at least think servers would be warm, welcoming,
gracious and accommodating. Zero for four. We were not some surly and or rude tourists. We spend 5 months a year on 30A and really root hard for local places to grow and thrive. The fact that on a Spring Break night very few people were eating dinner should be a Canary in the coal mine. Bill was over $150 for 3 people....and the inattentive service (I think we had 5 different people bring us various items we ordered) was just plain awkward. If you dig into the Trip Advisor reviews you see a pattern related to poor and unprofessional service and experiences that are not up to standards for what you pay for. Too bad. But we won’t be visiting here again.
