When Balthazar first opened, I worked within walking distance. Several years later, I was relieved that there would now be a longer distance between me and the bakery. But the memory of the buttery croissants, scones, and palmiers compels me back.
The key is to buy lots of stuff when you go. All of their items freeze remarkably well, even the delicate pastries. The breads are to die for, all of them, but especially the cranberry/pecan. Whatever is left of your baguette from the night before makes a delicious breakfast of toast (with real butter, preferably Irish, on top). And the staff is helpful and calm even in the face of an endless line of people asking questions about the ingredients.
Another piece of advice is not to focus on how much you just spent for treats and breads. It's worth it!

The food is generally better than average diner food. However it can be hit or miss. The Reuben wrap was delicious and my favorite is the mashed turnip side-never seen that anywhere else. The service is generally good however, the restaurant is small and the booths are tight. Not a comfortable place for a meal. Bathrooms need more attention. Parking is difficult during busy times. Food overall deserves three and a half stars.

X2O Xaviars on the Hudson is Peter X Kelly’s latest addition to the Xaviars Restaurant Group. It sits in the water on the only turn of the century Victorian pier still in use on the Hudson River. X2O’s Main Dining Salon's 25 foot vaulted ceiling and 3 walls of glass frame offers views of the George Washington and Tappan Zee Bridges, as well as sunsets over the Palisades. Guests encounter dishes incorporating classic French technique with Italian and Spanish influences, and Asian embellishments which create a wholly original cuisine unique to the Hudson Valley. The Dylan Lounge is a vibrant, up-tempo space with a sophisticated and playful bent that offers guests more dining options. Guests are invited to sample a variety of small plates and sushi, while dining at the Communal Table, sushi bar, or at traditional banquette and table seating.
The food tasted delicious and view overlooking the river was amazing. Unfortunately, 2 members of our party got sick that night. The one thing they ate in common was the seafood crepe appetizer.
The service left a lot to be desired. The main course was served immediately after the appetizer. We had to remind the server several times about our drink orders. The ala carte side dish was served after we ate our entrées. Lastly, I did not appreciate having an 18-20% tip automatically added to our tab since the service was lacking.
I would return to this restaurant for drinks during the warmer months so I can enjoy the Hudson River views.

Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx. It was fantastic!
I finally had a chance to eat here. I ordered the veal parm hero/wedge/hoagie/sub.
I sat at a table in the bar. The waiter brought out a bread basket. It was Arthur Ave bread, and it was delicious. When my sandwich was brought to the table, the visual is the contents of the sandwich. But when I picked it up, I could feel the bread was freshly baked. Like it came out of the oven an hour or two ago. When was the last time that happened! The sandwich was moist and tender. The bread quality enhanced the sandwich. Cost was $12. Locally, I can get a sandwich for $9.00, but the quality isn't the same. Can't wait to return.

We had an enjoyable lunch. They have a nice menu- many kinds of pizza, salads, wraps, panini, pasta, and a few entrees. I had a grilled vegetable wrap. My husband had a grilled chicken parm hero. We shared a slice of cheese pizza with mushrooms. Everything was fresh and tasty. In addition we had friendly service.

This is the bar I'd give the highest rate of all my reviews. A place where you feel welcome, cozy and relaxed. I've been with friends, we've had a byte, a few beers and cocktails. Before we left, I asked the bartender if I could bring a glass coaster as a souvenir. The bartender asked where I'm from, and suggested that I wait for him a minute or so. A few moments later, he came back with 3 mugs branded as his bar, postcards, coasters and other cool stuff, giving it to me as a souvenir, wishing us a safe trip back home. Such a kind gesture of sheer human goodness and hospitality at it's best left me speechless. I would always return to this bar, with warm feeling as if I were visiting old friends! That's how it's done, as a good host and a true gentleman!

Ambiance: You walk through this long tunnel, set up like a theatre's backstage or some old underground caverns. You finally reach a room with tall ceilings and some painting of an Italian building scene. It is not a terribly large space on the ground floor but enough. There is a small upstairs, which I ready about on Yelp. My husband jokingly said that the place confused him, it was new but it was old.The lights were pretty dim and there were candles on the tables. We entered just at the time a large party was getting ready to be seated. I can safely say that while they sat and ate, they were pretty loud, in addition to the wholly random shrieks from my toddler. This was not a date spot today.
Food: We ordered the short ribs special and the off the menu Pasta al Forno -
Baked rigatoni with meatballs, sopressata, ricotta, mozzarella, sliced egg & tomato sauce. That was mostly good. The meatballs were a bit understated-a little dry. They would have been nicer if soaking in sauce or moist. The ribs specials was just right, not too salty and flavorful. We also noticed that the food stayed warm while we ate.
Service: There were waiters zipping around and at times I could not see my waiter, so I just asked the closest ones for things I needed. They were happy to assist. The food also came out in good time.
We visited on a Thursday around 7pm. It was definitely more than half full, and almost no wait. I must say this, we walked down a few blocks to get there and none of the other places had people or if they had it was negligible. (The pizza shop does not count.) This is "the happening spot" according to my husband.

We had the meatballs which were good but quite different from the standard.
It came with onions and peppers. The Caesar salad had way too much dressing.
The pizza was thin and crisp very good.
Had the pork chops with onions and peppers. Two nice sized chops.
They were very good.mike had that also.
Ed and Dayle had the nocchi. We're very good. Kathy had a macorini special which was good.
Service was good.

Four of us enjoyed a wonderful lunch after the Train Show at the NYBG. We started with delicious stuffed Zucchini flowers(the highlight of the lunch) and the hot antipasto. We enjoyed lunch entrees of a special Pasta dish with eggplant and mushrooms, Pork Brasciola and Gnocchi Bolognese and Osso Bocco. All were delicious with generous lunch-size portions. The finish were espresso and cappuccinos with shared Italian cheese cake (very good) and Cassara (light and flavorful). We enjoyed the ambiance and efficient wait staff. Parking is a problem in the area and there is a municipal lot next to the restaurant but it was full with people waiting during the lunch hour. We found on the street paid parking a block away. Be sure to walk the neighborhood and visit the Market and individual shops (especially the Bakery next to the parking lot).

Seemed like a great place for gathering with friends, especially if young and out for a good time. It was a bit loud for us, two older gentlemen looking to visit and enjoy a draft beer or two. Very large industrial interior with metal bar stools, etc. Perhaps that accounts for the noise level. Staff were informative, but it took a long time to get someone over to the table. Once we got someone, he was fine and fun. Their hot wings were very good and came out quickly. We enjoyed our choices of beer. One of us had the 914 Vienna Lager, said to be their flagship beer. I had a flight first that was comprised of four offerings: New England IPA. Very good, cloudy and with a light citrus flavor. The 914 Vienna Lager. Very good. Nice balanced taste. The Belgian which was spicy sweet and finally the Schwartzbier, Mikey Likes It which was dark chocolaty and smooth. They were all good, but I went with the New England IPA for my full draft after the flight. Everyone in the place appeared to be having a good time.
