An authentic Irish pub in the heart of the Lakes Region. Created in the spirit of country pubs in southern Ireland, the owner, from Waterford, Ireland, assures us that the tradition and ambiance of a true ‘public house’ is presented to each guest that visits ‘the Bear.” The staff are each trained to pour a perfect pint, great food is delivered from the tiny kitchen, including local favorites like Fish ‘n Chips, steaks, salads, seafood, burgers, and amazing desserts. Ask your server about vegetarian and gluten free options too.
We have eaten her twice in last year. The food is good for a small Maine town. I like the seafood dishes. I had Salmon on a nice Summer Salad. The beer selection was also fairly good...they had Allagash White on tap. Overall the service team care for the customers well. Our last visit the order too much longer than it should have...I think the misplaced our order for a while.

A small local family owned business featuring Maine favorites and elevated pub fare. We're famous for our variety of 1/3 lb, fresh, tail knuckle and claw, Maine Lobster Rolls, but if seafood isn't you're thing, we've got amazing 1/2 lb Angus Burgers, Jumbo Wings, 24 Draft Beers, a full bar, and plenty more! Most of our seating is booth style (6ppl) seating, so larger parties beware, you may have to sit separately, unless, weather permitting, we have our outdoor patio available where we have larger tables. Join us for our weekly trivia game on Wednesday nights (8pm during summer, 7pm the rest of the year) and you're sure to win great prizes like movie tickets, beer swag, gift certificates and more! Stay tuned to our Facebook Page for up-to-date specials and events.
My husband and I really enjoyed our drinks and food. One of the best Bloody Mary's and veggie burgers I have had. Not enough waitstaff so staff was super rushed, dropping things and clearly frustrated. Based on what we had, kitchen is putting out great food (although maybe slow, we heard 40-minute wait time for food) and bartender can mix excellent drinks - make sure you have the needed staff to provide a smooth and calm environment. Still rating four stars because it may have just been one short staffed day during a busy holiday weekend and everything we had was excellent.

The places in this area are only REAL busy during the summer season and the staff are locals not always trained in efficient service. So, service will always be uneven, but friendly and accommodating. If you are in a hurry or want snap snap snap service, go to McDonalds, one of the fried seafood places or Portland. Otherwise, stay calm, but your phone away and talk with your dinner mates or one of the regulars.
Now, with that out of the way....let's talk specifically about Gary's Old Towne Tavern. The new owner is still struggling but trying. The kitchen still needs work both from a quality and execution standpoint. The draft beer taps are too warm, resulting in foaming beer. And while the bar stays open late, with weekends having music of various styles, the kitchen closes at 9:30. While this may be a good practice most nights, certain weekends they should have some kitchen service late. Otherwise you get a room full of drunks with no food or customers who come in for a drink and a snack and find just drinks. Last night a group of 30 came off the Songo Queen looking for food. While the kitchen was closed they were able to get chips and salsa. With no food this group left and took their money with them. The Drinks are ok, but I go for the music and friendly staff. I'll eat somewhere else. My 3 stars is an average of 2 for food and 4 for bar. Yes, I said the beer taps need work, but I'll drink something else when here.

Reservations are recommended as we dropped in one night only to be turned away. So we made reservations for the next night. It was busy but our service was good. I started my meal off with lamb short ribs which were excellent and really quite yummy. Hubby only got one of the five to taste as I didn't want to share anymore. For my main I had a house made wild mushroom ravioli which was three raviolis with spinach and wild mushrooms inside. Shavings of parmesan on top of a lovely sauce. Three were very large and filling. Hubby had the scallops which he enjoyed. Together we split a dessert that was an ice cream puff. Ice cream inside a pastry puff with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Wished that we could have had all of our dinners there.

Met a friend for drinks, the place was packed. We found ourselves a little table ordered a couple of margaritas and caught up. It’s a small place, Sports on the televisions, and limited in the types of tequila available:(. We ordered appetizers which were pretty good: typical pub style food. The service was wonderful and it was pretty much all locals. Would I recommend it as a place to have to visit? No, probably different during the summer where the strip is packed with a mix of locals and tourists. But it was a nice place for a quick drink and some much needed conversation.

I was torn on how to score this place. After sitting down, we pulled up other travelers reviews, and was expecting worse. We come to Maine every summer, and wanted to close out the week by getting in the stereotypical Maine lobster dinner. The place it's self is interesting in set up. Kind of an outdoor venue that has been screened in. Host was very nice. Server was nice. Lobster was perfect, but kind of hard to mess that up. Father in law had fried hadock and loved it. Kids had a pizza, which is good for kids, but as an adult if u had ordered it u would probably be let down. It was like a microwaved pizza. To be fair, I wouldnt expect much pizza wise from a lobster joint. Where it really let me down is cleanliness. My wife took a sip of water that was given to us, and said it tasted like cooking oil. Then we noticed the glasses. Unquestionably the dirtiest glass I have ever seen. All of them were almost yellow and cloudy. Clearly dirty. I ordered a soda and got the same thing. It was really gross. My lobster cracker also had an old chunk of meat in it, but the lobsters were soft shell so I didnt end up needing them. I got mushroom caps an an app, the mushrooms were undercooked. Wife and her mother split steamers, they liked them. Overall the food is good. Not great. Would have given 4 stars if not for the dirty dishes.

I needed a local place for six ladies to go for a pre-Christmas lunch on a Wednesday. At this time of year, many places in the vicinity are either closed completely, or closed until the weekend. Dugout, while closed Mon and Tues, is open the rest of the week.
They served us quite happily. They made me hot tea and delivered it with the milk and fake sweetner as requested. The Greek Salad was too large to finish - a generous portion for lunch. The tossed salads were nice. The grilled tuna and cheese nicely done, with slaw and fries. Adequate parking for all, nice ramp to enter, and within easy walking distance to library and other downtown spots including picturesque causeway. Give this place a try. Pizza looks to be handmade by owner with much care. Will try the calzones for dinner soon.
