Family Atmosphere Serving Catfish, Seafood, And Steaks!

This barn of a restaurant has the typical comfort food fare offered in small towns. The food was hot and plentiful but had tell tale signs of Sysco. The service was attentive and price was reasonable. Catfish and oysters were ok. Don't expect to be delighted. Expect to leave full.

Kirby's Barbecue

Kirby's BBQ
Mexia TX
11 March, 2016

I was nervous about pronouncing the name of this town. Muh-HAY-uh is how the friendly woman behind the counter at Kirby's pronounced it. I was her baby, as well as her darling, about thrice each during the brief conversation during which I ordered lunch. Kirby' has the lowest prices of any of the many best barbecue joints I've eaten at. Three others visited on this trip charge over 1.5 times what one pays here for untrimmed brisket. Kirby’s tall ceilinged dining room is surrounded by a shelf about a foot wide and about 8 feet high that is crammed with a remarkably diverse collection of “central Texana,” shall we call them, and beneath which are nestled at least two carved wooden Indians. A plains Indian breastplate with explanatory text is in one corner.

(Kirby charges more for trimmed.) I played the Seattle card, stating the origin of my trip, implying that my present site was the sole goal of my travels, and got a taste of the ham, seldom encountered at barbecue joints. This was a revelation. It was moist, delicious, smoky, with black crust (probably salt and pepper), and not sweet in any way I could taste.

•pork ribs are smoky, with dark rose flesh, more tasty than tender, but tender enough
•untrimmed brisket, very tender with well rendered fat, great smoky taste
•ham, see above

Kirby's sauce is medium reddish brown with few particulates, a straightforward union of tomato, smoke, and vinegar that in moderation complements the ribs better than the brisket. Viscosity: 2 (on a scale wherein water is 1 and poi is 10).

•cole slaw, not sweet, this was tasty & lovely to behold, made with a cabbage of variegated green leaves running from Kelly green to pale pastel, with red cabbage & carrot for colorful accents
•pinto beans, straightforward, not sweet, with a few flecks of meat

•buttermilk pie: one of the young whippersnapperish women in the front of Kirby’s fixed me with a stare when I was finagling my ham sample. “You want buttermilk pie,” she uttered in firm but balanced tones. I was slow to respond. The older woman who had given me the ham prodded me gently (verbally), until I said, “What I want is an entire buttermilk pie, but I’ll purchase a slice of buttermilk pie.” “For here or to go?” The older woman cut in, “Can’t you see he’s fixin’ to leave?” The younger said, “He might sit down again.” I said, “To go, please.”

The buttermilk pie was extraordinarily delicious, the tartness of the buttermilk nicely balancing the custard elements from the eggs & sugare.

oldest fried chicken place in Mexia! has 'outlived 'some Franchise places over the years! Anna Nicole Smith worked here when in high school! the portions are large and tasty- they soak the chicken in a special garlic/salt marinade for hours before cooking it in public view.... likeable experienced owners!

Unique flavor in a good way. I tried the sliced beef and pork combo plate. Sauce was not as sweet as most Texas BBQ, but very GOOD. Potato salad didn't have onions, which is the way I like it. Two thumbs up and will be back!!

This restaurant is good. I wouldn't say it's great. It's a mix of traditional Mexican and Tex mex. I'm never quite sure what to expect when I order something different than normal. Overall it's hit or miss. The fajitas are good. Queso is good as well. Other than that you are taking your chances. The manager is WONDERFUL!

Burgers are pretty good. Come in wax paper. Great local non chain burger. They are on the smaller side. If you want the best burger in town go to unlimited basket.
