Neat little place. Was disappointed that they ran out of Capt Morgan. We stopped last year at the same time and they ran out that night as well. Enjoy the peanuts they have available.

On the banks of the Mississippi (great river road).
We stopped for lunch looking forward to a local roadhouse atmosphere. Service was very good. We each ordered the garlic chicken breast which came with a salad and asparagus. The salad included two tomato wedges and sliced onions. Alright but not great. The asparagus was good, but the chicken was rubbery. We should have returned it to the kitchen but we kept hoping it would get better. Our mistake. When we were done the waitress asked how it was and we were honest with her. Would have thought we might have gotten a discount or something. No go. Once again service was good and it was our mistake for not returning the meat to the kitchen.

There may not be too many places to eat around here but the Wooden Nickel makes up for it with great burgers, good selection of beer and local flavor. This is not a fancy joint and the bar is the best place to sit if you want to mingle with the locals and catch up on some gossip.

We enjoyed the salad bar with two kinds of soup and several different salads. The French dip sandwich was awesome- would highly recommend it. We also had a slice of pie which was good, but one of the cut edges had been exposed to the air for awhile and was rather rubbery. Service was very friendly and great location on the main street.

This is bar with some really great pizza and hospitality. It's right off the scenic Great River Road in small downtown De Soto. From motorcycle enthusiasts traveling through to the local folks down the street, we really enjoy coming to this establishment for their selections of beer and to play a good house dice game from time to time.

Four of us had dinner here on a quiet Sunday night. The food, decor and service all exceeded expectations. It's not surprising that a small town such as Lansing has limited dining options, but in my experience, this is far and away the best choice.

It’s been a couple years since we’ve been inside of this place and nothing important has changed. The staff are still quirky, the place is still old (but the restrooms have been redone!), the prices are still modest, the food is still tasty, and it’s still a great bargain.
What you have to remember is where this place is. It’s in a small Mississippi River town, 25 miles away from big fancy stores and large crowds. So you come here for good home cooking, and remember that this isn’t the place for elaborate salads, or exotic ingredients. This is hometown cooking in the Great Midwest.

If u like omelettes, you have to try Nutmegs. Yum!! The omelettes are loaded with your choice of fillings and come with hash browns and toast. They are huge and the price is very reasonable!!
The bakery items especially the cinnamon rolls- what else can I say but delicious. Never had any other bakery items but they look very good.
Waitresses are very pleasant and attentive.
Try out Nutmegs!!

Stopped here for lunch on our way to do some trout fishing around Lansing Iowa. We both had the Tenderloin, I with fries, hub with coleslaw. HUGE and so delicious. Hub finished the whole thing, but I had to quit about half way through. Smaller eaters split this one. People were so friendly, we were sorry we weren't staying at their campground, looked great with mini golf and located right on a stocked creek. They have camp sites and cabins, clean and very nice. Guy told us all the best places to fish. If we go back to Lansing, we will definitely try and stay here.

We were driving along the Mississippi and were looking for a lunch stop by the water. Shep's it was. At first we felt like we were walking into Cheers but the locals quickly warmed up to us. There is a bar when you first walk in but there is also a dining area that overlooks the river. The view was beautiful. We opted to eat at the bar and enjoy the view from there. The bartender was fast, efficient and friendly. The food too was very good. You get the best of both worlds here. Stop in if you have time.
