Don't be turned off by the strip mall store front. Once inside, you will find and impeccably clean, nicely decorated restaurant. They literally got 100% on their cleaning inspection.
Various members of our party tried the brisket, ribs, catfish and trout. The catfish and trout were deep fried and both were excellent, particularly the catfish. The brisket and ribs with homemade bbq sauce were also very good. A few things to try: 1) The fried green beans were terrific. The regular green beans were cooked with a generous amount of ham. I prefer green beans cooked a bit less, but they were also quite good. 2) Don't miss the cornbread 3) Dessert: Get the donuts. Just get them. They are freshly made, hot from the fryer, glazed and then served with chocolate sauce. The apple crisp was also out-of-this-world. Completely home-made with fresh apples. If only I had a dollop of vanilla ice cream to go with it!
The best part about Mema's is the service. We met Mema (grandma) and she was adorable. If you are looking for something other than your typical restaurant chain, a place where the proprietors put their heart and soul into the place, Mema's is for you. Google maps had Mema's pin in the wrong place (right off I-40). Go about a mile past the pin down the road into Burgaw, and turn right at the light. You will see a little strip mall on the right. Mema's and another restaurant are in the strip mall. Again, don't be put off by the strip mall location and signage. We almost went somewhere else when we saw the store-front, but once inside you step into another world. They also had live music that was being set up, but we left before the musician started to play.
Enjoy!

Clean. Unique atmosphere! Large dining areas with table/chairs & booths. Friendly efficient staff. My husband & I ordered the bacon cheeseburgers which were delicious! Family owned by an avid hunter so many examples of taxidermy on display! Not to worry-no grilled fox on the menu! The restaurant overlooks the local creek so you never know what you might see during your meal!

We were seated promptly, greeted kindly, received drinks & an (awful) appetizer.
Then 45 min passed... We saw our waitress walk by over & over again... she never refilled our drinks or most importantly, never took our food order. So, we sadly left! We were really looking forward to trying out a new place.

While exploring the old historic section around the county court house in Burgaw, NC we saw a sign for The Other Place Café off Fremont St. Always willing to try new restaurants at least once, we found the entrance in the side alley.
The inside was bigger than it looked, very cute & clean. Right now (Oct. 2016) it's only open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., but we heard it might be open for dinner on weekends soon.
My husband ordered the veggie omelet with grits & toast. I ordered 2 eggs with grits & it came with 2 biscuits. When told the biscuits would be grilled, I opted for just plain "naked" biscuits.
Everything was really good & cooked extremely well, but the highlight was the most DELICIOUS grits we've ever had. They had a slightly firmer texture than the normal thin grits, with spots of yellow (corn?) & a taste we couldn't place. When asked, the waitress said it was a secret recipe from the owners grandmother & even they didn't know how it's made.
The prices were very reasonable & even though we live 30 miles from there, we will be back.....not only for the grits, but to try their lamb dishes.

Came here for a meal with the family. We ate breakfast. Place wasn't very busy and the food came out pretty quickly. Food was ok.. Grits were bland, coffee was very watery, and the food was mediocre at best. Had to sit at a dirty table, because there were no clean ones available. Waitress was plesant, but was clearly very busy and was a bit rushy. Simple menu with basic breakfast choices and sandwiches and burgers for lunch. Not many restaurant choices in Burgaw so this is pretty much the only choice for a sit down breakfast. Will likely just make breakfast at home next time....

We had BLT's. Very, very good. The service excellent. Atmosphere friendly, charming, down home!
Only one partial cake left. Sign close to ceiling proclaims: We have good cake.
Gave it a try. The cake is not just good, it is EXCELLENT!
Cakes here are made from "scratch". And obviously from quality ingredients. Our group all agreed that it was one of the best cakes we'd ever eaten.
So good we got more to take home.

Exploring old downtown Burgaw, N.C. (antique shops & not much else) & decided to try this "quaint" looking local eatery on a side street. The outside looks like part of an old warehouse or auto parts place, but the inside was plain & clean (even the bathroom) & had obvious locals eating there.
Took a chance & ordered the 10" small (big enough for two people) Spinach Chicken Alfredo pizza for $10.95. Since I like red sauce better, the owner/cook gladly substituted it for the white alfredo sauce.
Was kind of afraid it would be awful, but..........IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST PIZZA WE'VE EVER HAD......anywhere !!!!
Other folks looked like they were enjoying some Stromboli (like a Calzone) & big salads. Quite a few local construction type workers came in to pick up food to-go also.
We will definitely go back to try other things. Go there !!!

Got off I-40 for a quick lunch at Burgaw Hardee's Store #1823-1505610. Most Hardee's are standard and usually ok & would rate 3 or 4 stars for fast food, depending on the service, but this one was terrible & the worse I have ever seen.
At the drive thru they would not accept a coupon because it had expired a few days previously. Every other Hardees's always accepts expired coupons. Then, after a very, very long wait they gave us someone else's order and then gave us a partial order missing the Fries. Then another long wait for cold, soggy fries. I then had to go in for new hot fries. Also, forgot to mention that they did not put the Honey Mustard Sauce in with the Chicken Tenders- another trip into the store for me.
Corporate Management needs to investigate this store.

Want to feel like a local? This is your place! I had the daily special ribeye sandwich and wife had smiley mountain dog. Sweet tea was great you can tell it was fresh, too many places let it set overnight and it gets funky. Small place only seats 24 but it's mostly locals for sure. Had a great time just eaves dropping on the everyday lives of normal people. Everyone was very friendly. Prices were very reasonable ribeye was not huge but with the pile of fries it was very filling. Taste was good, really liked the grilled onions and bread seamed fresh. Hot dog was ok as hot dogs go. I see they got a 87.5 health inspection which is very good. Overall 3.5 stars for food bumped to 4 for friendliness and tea
