This restaurant spans back hundreds of years when this place was the frontier. Back then there was a spring in the house and people would come by for good water. People are still coming to the house and for good reason. Not only is this place charmingly local with a cool history, it serves up decent food as well. I went with the steak, which had a nice marinade giving a very nice flavor to the steak overall. The fries corn was very moreish, and could definitely see eating way too much of that. The service was good and the people were lovely â definitely recommend!

We were a large group (27 people), and had made a reservation weeks in advance. We arrived at 7pm, they pointed us to our table.... with room for 18 people. We had to ask other people to move so that we could all get seated (we later found out that the people we asked to move was one of the owners and his friends). It took until after 7:30pm for everyone to place their order, as we all had to stand in line to place our order at one of 2 registers. We then had to wait forever for the food to come out, with the last couple of orders finally arriving after 9:30pm! It was total chaos. You knew it was bad when people throughout the place (not just our group) were applauding when their food finally arrived. When I spoke to one of the owners, he explained that they just can't really handle such a large crowd all at once. I suggested that maybe they shouldn't take reservations for such large groups (or at least make it clear how long we would have to wait), and his response was "yeah.... we're not going to do that... people never mind waiting more than an hour for their food". WHAT?!?!? Did he really just say that?!?!? I was appalled by his indifference. Part of me wished he would have lied and told me he felt bad for us having to wait so long (but he didn't).The beer was very good, but you had to wait in the same line to get a beer as to order food, and few were willing to wait in line to get a second beer. The food was "good" (but check out the pic of how small the wings were), the beer was "very good", but the service and ownership is the model for how NOT to run a business. Stay away from this place, until they learn how to run a hospitality business.
After a couple of yearsâ wait, the old Walkers Cash Store has been restored handsomely as the St. Luke Co-Op. Austin the owner and his family have renovated the building inside and out, with hand-finished hardwood slab tables, a great rustic new bar, fresh paint, and an upgraded open general store area. Best of all is the serious barbecue equipment outside, which provides a great smoky aroma for all of us in the neighborhood ... and the best barbecue around. Our favorite is the brisket, but the chicken and pork are outstanding as well. Weâve had several sides, from the zippy collards to the beans. Excellent bbq sauce ... Buy the bbq by the pound and heâll throw in buns for you to make sandwiches at home. The Co-Op also serves great sandwiches and breakfast fare ... Austin features local artisans and artisans and their wares ... heâs selling a range of country items and food (we tried the coconut candies and chocolates this weekend, and the huge home-made cookies last weekend) ... and ice cream, along with a handful of additional basic items. Locals predominate for meals, but with time the Co-Op will attract tourists running up and down the beautiful Shenandoah Valley on Back Road. Austin, your neighbors thank you for bringing this classic old building back to life on Back Road!
