Tournai is a charming small town near France that begs to be discovered. With more than 2,000 years of history, Tournai’s roots began as a market town (Tornacum) near the crossroads of a Roman road. Today, the sprawling municipality includes more than 1,000 kilometres of signposts, with guidance from “Rambling Cards,” allowing Tournai to be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. Here an old chapel, there a castle or an old farm – there’s so much to see in Tournai that you’ll soon realize you’ve been exploring for hours. Must-see attractions include Notre Dame Cathedral in Tournai, The Belfry, Museum of Fine Arts, the Castle of Beloeil, and the Museum of Tapestry and Textile Arts.

Looking forward to revisiting Belgium, we stayed in St Aubert near Tournai (after our first booking in Tournai was a no show by the proprietor). At Les Pelerins the restaurant was noisy with small children, the service slow and neglectful. Both the frites and the fish were as cold as the salad. Fine if it was cheap but it was expensive at about 25 Euro per main. Rain didn't help, but the locality was also dismal. Go to Bruges instead. Much nicer.

This brasserie bailed me out tonight. I wanted somewhere informal and which could provide a decent dinner at a decent price (for Grand'Place prices). I went to some featuring much higher up the ratings and found them too formal, so didn't stay. I went into one recommended by locals, only to find that they had finished serving by 9pm. Feeling a bit hungry by now, I headed for this brasserie and got a pleasant welcome, quick service and, more important, got served at a fairly early hour, especially with the time change for us Brits meaning it was only 8pm. The chicken was moist with a very large quantity served. Goodness knows what was in the sauce (this place isn't for gourmets) but there was enough of it to help the two large portions of chicken go down. No room in my belly for crepes as a dessert :(Tournai is rough around the edges in some respects and comes complete with beggars (three in three days). I've eaten at a couple of places this week where the upholstery isn't in perfect condition, including at Le Petrus, nor the general décor, but what's the point of experiencing other countries if you want them all to be to the same homogenised standard? That takes away the character of a place. The architecture in this square is stunning and it is that which is a secret gem in Northern Europe.

Unfortunately site was not accessible - Mons is to be the Cultural capitol 2015 and is being 'prepared' the beffroi is one of such buildings. However, we did take photos of the outside. I am told the gardens behind are really worth a visit too!

Vegetarian restaurant in Tournai. Our menu changes every week! You will also find vegan (vegan) and gluten free dishes. The theme: "Cuisine du monde" in a cozy and friendly atmosphere
J'y retournerai volontiers.
