Not a restaurant. That's in the airport. This is THE bar of Oakland. First and last stop of merchant marines and other salty dogs for generations.I come for people watching. I bring drinkers. I have a Coke. One day, I'll read every card pinned to the ceiling, and remember every photo on the walls. Who am I kidding? It's too much to take in within a single lifetime. The drinkers say there's great drinking to be had.

We visited this eatery before the Dobs-Spurs NBA playoff. Old style place. Classic floor, side-booths, reminds one of traditional, historic restaurants. Walls are adorned with antique black/white photos depicting local visual history. Monday, (all day) oysters for $1,00 each. Nice touch!, Before the 530pm tip-off, our 230PM seating allowed us only selections from the off-time bar menu. Corned-beef sliders were fresh, not salty and served on fresh rolls. Called drinks were $10.00, 30% less expensive than San Francisco restaurants. French fries, $7.00 crispy and delicious.Very good value and prices were reasonable. Service was respectful and instant. Worth a return.

We went here as we love "local" hangouts and the Portal fit the bill. The beer menu was nicely curated with something for everyone. The breweries selected were diverse and upper tier. Food was really quite good - we had calamari (excellent), pan seared salmon (good), 1/2 burger (excellent), and Cesar salad (ok). Service was friendly but the timing of delivery of food was a bit off - but I am not terribly concerned about that as it was just me and my husband and I had ordered my entree a few minutes after the initial order - I just figured they would wait a bit on his burger and serve them together. Instead they served his burger first followed by the calamari appetizer and then my entree. The atmosphere is funky and fun - limited indoor seating and large view patio of the lake. It was soooo cold in there, we had to wear our jackets. I saw 2 small space heaters but they were not at all adequate. I almost wondered if sitting outside under the heat lamps would have been a warmer choice. Unisex bathroom was clean, but had the graffiti vibe on the mirrors. You could probably have kids with you on the patio - not sure. Overall - would recommend - just bring a warm coat and hat if it's winter!

Enjoyed our sausages on the waterfront. Delicious juicy cooked to perfection sausages with an abundance of sauerkraut and mustard. Also enjoyed fieldwork beer. The German comfort food hit the spot but unfortunately the tables and benches were filthy and sticky. My wife wore white pants and when she stood up to go had a collage on her back side.

Server was great as was the view and the extensive beer on tap menu. Cioppino was not good. Scallops, mussels and clams were good. Shrimp were tough and likely from cooking all day. Calamari was so tough it was inedible. Broth was ok but lacking any real zing. Tons of seafood, though, and I could not finish even though I skipped some per above. Expensive. Wonât be back.

We loved this place but the menu was disappointing. Then we found out that they'd had a kitchen fire so weren't at full menu. But the beer was great and the vibe was very "happening" with the best that Oakland can offer....young, old, families, pets, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity. Wonderful!
