Our friends took us to the Rose & Crown for a meal. On arrival at this rather small cottage style pub I was not expecting much. Walking in it felt small but welcoming. There is a vast array of ales and cider's on offer not normally found. We had a reserved table so soon got seated with our drinks and a copy of the menu to read. The atmosphere was nice the decor was old pub style with black Oak beams across the ceiling and big heavy wood doors. It is almost a nice step back in time all it really needed was an open fire. We ordered from a very good menu covering good pub foods, at this point it would be a great idea to get another drink, your meal will be freshly cooked, do not expect a gastro pup speedy service. What you will get after a good wait is an excellently prepared and cooked meal served with a smile buy some wonderful young ladies. The size of the meal are very good and the prices exceptionally good. I had the house Mixed Grill and could not manage it all on the night. A large steak, 2x nice pieces of liver, pork steak,gammon steak, mushrooms, tomato, thick chips, 2xblack pudding and chicken all very well cooked a presented. This great old pub is well worth a visit but is not large so I would recommend you call and book a table then sit back and enjoy a great ale or cider while the great staff cook you a wonderful meal.

Lunchtime visit after a long period before visiting was satisfying . Venue nice and menu extensive . Very reasonable and food was of good quality . Reasonably busy for a Thursday lunchtime . Staff were attentive . Nothing overall exceptional but for the price it is value for money . Thank you for taking the time to leave a lovely review. This pub is definitely worth a visit as it is one Marston's chain pub that really makes an effort for its customers. The food is well presented and offered at a very reasonable price, with a number of lunchtime and steak deals on offer. Management here are trying a second real ale right now to go alongside Pedigree, too. It's been a while since I last visited this pub - what an improvement.

Always a good place to eat particularly lunchtimes . Sit down with friends as there’s no pressure to finish ASAP . excellent value for money . Good wholesome fresh food . Staff polite and will always inform you when they are busy if there is a wait for food . Will be back soon

The food in this pub is superb, it'll give any restaurant a run for it's money! The girl behind the bar always has a smile on her face, we take our elderly father in law there all the time and she has even started calling him Grandad, which he loves! The chef is a master of his craft, every meal is always polished off as it's cooked to perfection!Best eaterie in the town without doubt!Thank you for your lovely review.It’s always nice to see you all when you are down here visiting Grandad!See you next time.

Great location in town, rooms are clean and good size. Just remember that on a Friday and Saturday your sleeping above a disco...but great in that not far to crawl to bed. Fabulous breakfast served every morning. Staff are great and friendly and the pub is dog friendly.... will be returning. Fans of the chicken wings !!! thank you for the credited response

We visit apt of wetherspoons as they are great for families with young children. This particular one was very impressive.Firstly the building is like no other restaurant or pub, it is an old theatre and they have continued this theme throughout. Very nice atmosphere.The staff are friendly and the food was very well cooked and presented.The best wetherspoons we've been to.

If we're planning to meet socially over a beer in March, this is the first choice pub, for atmosphere, location, drinks, and a friendly atmosphere. As a bonus, whilst they don't do anything else food-wise, they do an excellent full-English on certain days of the week. On a sunny day, a pint or three outside by river is just the ticket.

Looking for a light lunch on a jaunt to March we happened across The Acre - formerly the Rose and Crown, I learned a little later when popping into the town museum - tucked behind the main drag right in the town centre and sitting alongside the river.I'd normally look for a free house on such occasions but this Greene King pub looked popular, with lots of outdoor tables and plenty of punters indoors, too.No real surprises on the menu but a decent choice for all-comers and a selection of specials above the bar.The tuna jacket potato scored a double thumbs up, a quality spud given just the right amount of cooking and a generous, but not over the top. filling. I was hankering for a ploughman's but once again found it missing from the menu - has it been consigned to history? The hunt goes on. However, the simple ham sandwich was a real winner, too - thick slices of premium ham, similar slabs of fresh tomato and doorstep slices of bread, not too thick to interfere with transfer from plate to mouth but a real meal. Keep it simple, do it well, add a pint of local beer, tick tick tick.Service was efficient and well-organised but not superfast and I could easily see how the team could get swamped at peak periods, but we had no complaints.Not open on a Monday, apparently. I can’t understand why this place is so high on the list. Went here for a carvery on a Sunday and I really can not see what everyone is raving about. Our experience included frozen vegetables and no wine list?? What eatery doesn’t have a wine list? The staff were friendly enough albeit quite young which brings looks of confusion when asked questions. The quality of the meat I have to say was good and the desserts were a 6 out of ten. Overall a strange experience with mediocre food that I won’t be chomping the bit to get back to.
