Old Chicago

Went for lunch on a Sunday and probably should have left when we noticed it was dead at the peak after-church lunch time. Ordered 2 kids cheeseburgers, spaghetti, and a salad. Waited 45 minutes for the food, and waitress forgot our kids meal sodas for about 25 minutes. Once food arrived... they forgot the bread with my spaghetti so my husband gave me his off his salad plate, and it was hard as a brick. They put bleu cheese all over my husbands salad after he specifically asked it be left off, so they had to remake the salad. They forgot ketchup on daughters cheeseburger that we specifically requested and left on all the salad/tomatoes that we specifically requested be left off. We asked for ketchup only on son’s cheeseburger and they put mayo only, which he hates, so he could barely eat it after we scraped the mayo off with napkins. Waitress never offered to refill kids drinks, though they sat empty/nearly empty the whole time we ate. Waitress kept rolling her eyes every time we told her of all the food errors. Manager knew of the error with my husbands salad. Table behind us didn’t get appetizer until after their food came out, so their app was comped. We waited to see if anything would be comped on our bill since we had worse issues than they did. Nothing was comped. We didn’t ask bc we were in a hurry by that time and don’t like causing trouble, but it was ridiculous nothing was offered. We will never be back. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Woody's Woodfire Pizza

We stopped in here to have some really good wood-fired pizza. Friendly staff ... excellent food. Small place. Locally owned. Why do we call it pickleball pizza? It's because we played the owners, Pete and Heidi, in a pickleball tournament last week in Branson. They were wearing their store shirts and asked us to try out their pizza. (Don't confuse it with BBQ also called Woody's.) Give them a try. We're glad we did.

Been hearing good things about this place. Stopped in for lunch while we visited the area. Walking in we're greeted by a pie case with mouth watering deserts. (Check the website as we were on a mission for the pizapi (as the caterer vehicle's license displayed). Walking down the counter we see several XL pans of various pizza-by-the slice offerings for lunch. James offered us any table and helped us by describing the two styles of pizza — a New York style thin-crust pizza (cooked in a Bakers Pride deck oven) and a NEOpolitan pizza (cooked in an Acunto wood fired oven). We opted for a six slice 12" NEO and a side of caprese. Fresh wedges of tomato and fresh mozzarella and basil drizzled with a balsamic glaze and EVOO...sharable and delicious. In 15+ min our pie was delivered. It was based with a real, fresh, and refreshing tomato sauce... NOT the canned marinara of the chains. THIS stuff was delightfully different...like Gramma would make from scratch...even had seeds still in it. The toppings of pepperoni, cheeses, and roasted peppers and onion made it a very tasty melt in your mouth pie. Going back next trip to try the NY style and save room for some of those deserts. It was an awesome lunch with awesome service and assistance from James. Worth the short side step off Route 66.

We did not eat in at this place, but ordered delivery to our hotel room. The pizza was excellent. The delivery came exactly when promised. Our delivery man was personable and professional. We looked up places to order delivery in Joplin on TripAdvisor and as usual, we were not disappointed with our choice. A big thank you to all those who gave positive reviews of this place. They were deserved.

This location seems to change staff a lot. The staff they have are friendly but the turnover seems to be great. The lunch buffet is good and they do well to keep up with the daily demand. They seem to be a little short staffed but the ones that are there do a good job waiting on people. We've never had problems with the carry out in the evenings. Our orders have always been correct. The restaurant looks a little dingy. The glass door needs cleaning and it looks like it need a good scrub down all over. Our plates have always been clean so I think it's really just the place itself that gives the impression that everything is messy.

JJ's Woodfire Pizza is a nice local establishment. It's not "perfect" and it's not a 5-star establishment, but it's not bad, either, as some reviewers seem to have suggested. The fact that they have so many freaking chairs and tables that it's hard to navigate the back room is, at the very least, a testament to the fact that lots of people like to eat there. I've eaten there probably 50 times on the lunch buffet. I've also ordered during dinner when they aren't having a buffet and had an even better experience than lunch. If you're all about pizza toppings and not so much about pizza crust, you should check them out at *least* once. You first need to know a few things about JJ's. It was started by a criminal justice class at a local college as they discussed how not to get "ripped off" in business (or something like that, you can find more in the local press about this). Their professor is "JJ" Spurlin, who still teaches at the local college. The oven is woodfired using local oak and hickory logs, which means it takes a lot of skill to get things cooked "just right" and not too much or too little. JJ's is styled as a sports bar, with 4 or 5 big TV's, pool table, air hockey, etc. I can't comment on the bar itself as I don't drink. The building doesn't have too much room in it, either. They are tied into the Webb City community. Local sports heroes have their photos on the wall in the back room, and JJ has several pictures of them with him also. They have special events (karaoke, trivia night) and special pies made for special occasions (the head chef is fairly creative with the pizzas). They take great pride in their food, but are typically a little short-staffed when things get really busy. If things *aren't* busy, the quality of food on the buffet may go down a bit, as well (it's hard to put out food for people to NOT eat). But they are actually a little better than several other local places at keeping pizza on the buffet when busy, and considering how little manpower they have in the kitchen, that's fairly impressive. They don't skimp on ingredients. The pies have very thin crusts and typically are "top heavy", that is, lots of cheese and toppings. They have some very unique pies, such as cheeseburger pizza (with pickles and a mustard-like sauce), BBQ pork shoulder (BBQ sauce, also used on several other pies), mac-n-cheese pizza (which seems a little weird, but kids do like mac-n-cheese), and so on. They really shine on the house specialties --- the "Dublin J" is the supreme and the "Neanderthal" is their take on a "Meat Lover" type pie. Their salad bar is one cut above local standards in that the greens tend greener. The marinara sauce is supposedly a secret recipe ... I don't notice anything unusual about it, though. They drive to Iowa for a special pepperoni that they use on occasion (and JJ's dad smokes the pork shoulder on weekends). The fact that they use so much cheese is responsible for a recent price hike for the lunch buffet. With a soft drink and tax, you'll pay $10.71 these days. That's still competitive, but it's not the BK dollar menu, either.Service is typically good, but once again, when very busy you may not see a server as often as you'd like. I don't agree that the place is "dirty". Maybe compared to a hospital, but compared to McDonald's or Wendy's it's quite clean, indeed. So, JJ's isn't perfect, but it's still good pizza, decent pricing, good service.
