A TRATTORIA is an Italianstyle eating establishment, less formal than a ristorante, but more formal than an osteria. There are generally no printed menus, the service is casual, wine is sold by the decanter rather than the bottle, moderate prices, and the
We've been traveling in Indonesia for three weeks, and long had grown tired to the typical Indonesian dishes that appear on almost any dinner menu. So, tonight, tired and hungry we went with Italian. The place wasn't that empty on a Monday night, so we had attentive service, and didn't have to wait that long before our main courses arrived. They served us yummy break sticks and such to help with the hunger. The service was cheerful (even if their English was rudimentary at best), the food decent (not great) and the atmosphere was on the loud side, but we found a quiet corner to ourselves.

I have now eaten at all three iterations of this delightful restaurant. Their first place, which was actually on the site of their current location, before a hotel was built on it, was rustically cute. The second location was temporary and had no atmosphere to speak of. And their new location, in the hotel that was built on the original property, is contemporary coziness. In all three locations, both the food and the service were - and are - outstanding. The food, both pasta (homemade) and pizza (thin crust), is delicious, and unlike in some restaurants n this town that serve Western food, arrives at the table piping hot. Whoever owns/manages/cooks at Massimo knows Italian food. Last night we each had a pasta dish (there were two of us) and we ordered a medium pizza; we also had a beer and an ice tea - the price was 176,000 rupiah or around US $13! Highly, highly recommended.
