We reserved a space for dinner at Al Prato due to a restaurant owner in our home town in USA. We found a gem. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner, all fresh food, beautifully presented. Great wine choices. Very attentive staff. We had a great time sharing top quality lamb chops, rooster, pasta, and lake fish. A memorable restaurant in Varenna.

We ate here and had a truly fabulous experience , the food wine and views over the lake were all superb! Sylvia is an excellent host and explains the food and wine - all part of the fixed price menu . I let her know when I booked that a vegetarian meal was required and that was sorted ! A lovely family atmosphere - all worth the journey up a very steep hill to get there!

Don´t be afraid to visit this restaurant even though it´s a part of the hotel which is usually not a good sign. However this place is really amazing. The environment isn´t the most beautiful I have ever seen, but the quality of the cousine moves everything onto the highest levels.I tried a traditional regional menu - pizzoccheri della valchiavenna, deer and desert being surprised by a small antipasto before as a free gift. This even helped to completely destroyed me as everything was so good not to be able to leave anything. Be aware that the portions are huge here, for example pizzoccheri could be enought for a diner, but it would be pity not to try also something else. Having closed everything with local amaro was a final point of a perfect experience which I would like to repeat.

We were excited to eat here after reading all the fabulous reviews. However, our meal was disappointing. I ordered the lamb stew which was bland and tasteless. My daughter had the fish which was also under seasoned. I will say the artichoke soup was delicious and they were nice enough to split an order for us. The place seemed a bit too pretentious for our taste. The service, while efficient, felt a bit unfriendly. I was hoping for more small trattoria vs fine dining stuffiness and would not return.

Dinner is very tasty, you can order different pasta meals with home-made pasta. We had dinner at the hotel several times and ate pasta with different cheeses, porcinos, different meat like deer and beef, polenta (which is a speciality of the region, there are different types). They also serve big platters (which looked nice, we saw it from other guests, but did not get the chance to taste it, also they serve "branzi" which is a local cheese (and also the name of a village nearby). Chiavenna is the place where " crotti " abound.Crimea is an hotel,centrally located, pretending to offer food as a restaurant, only to justify a higher price.Do'nt be fooled !If it was honest enough to call itself crotto, I would not bother to write about...Lousy food ending up with a factory made "gelato", an outdated wine list with a lame excuse that we are "fuori stagione".I had to content myself with a Morellino di Scansano that I would'nt recommend to my worst enemy and a bill over ⬠40, no first course, no coffee or Digestive.In essence, to be avoided, there are around decent "crotti" where there is value for your money.Up to you...
