On the considered recommendation of a local I sneaked into Freckles Cafe for a quick pie. I ordered the mince and cheese and was impressed by the generous filling and the crisp pastry shell. Coffee was fine and the surroundings very comforting. Worth a look.

We arrived in Westport after a long drive from Queenstown. It was quite late to find something to eat, maybe 8.30pm. The first three places we tried were closed for private parties, fully booked, or just shut, and we were despairing of finding anything open and serving food. This place had a big private party in but allowed us to dine in the bar area, despite their closing time being just a few minutes away (the private party would keep them open longer on this evening). The staff were obviously very busy but they were friendly and attentive, taking our order quickly. We both had one of the specials, a steak, and they arrived fairly swiftly and were absolutely delicious. If anyone is looking for dinner in Westport, which resembles a ghost town at 8.30pm on a Friday evening in December, definitely try this place, they deserve your custom.

Gibby's Cafe - the bright green cafe on the corner of Palmerston & Brougham streets. Breakfast menu available all day. Gluten free and vegetarian options available. Come try one of Gibby's famous homemade pies or a world famous West Coast whitebait pattie
I dont even bother making salads at home any more...because Gibbys are the best hands down. The wraps are fabulous of course....

We were a family group of 7, and we hadn't booked but managed a good table on a fairly busy evening. friendly service, a good menu with choices for all (including excellent choices for the children, e.g. Children's roast meal). The whitebait fritter was superb! Overall, an excellent meal experience. Highly recommended.

Located in the scenic Buller Gorge, this is the place to stop; relax and enjoy a locally roasted organic coffee in the breath taking views of the mighty Buller River. With a wide selection of fresh homemade food and a choice of drinks available, there is
It is quite a long drive from Westport to Murchison through the Buller Gorge, and this café by the side of the road makes a good break point. The café has a long window wall overlooking the river and gorge, and has a couple of feature walls made up of large rounded river stones. A roaring fire adds to the ambiance! We have a light lunch of toasted sandwiches which are nicely presented and very satisfying. Bottled water is provided. Toilet facilities are available for customers. I think the number of food options is rather limited, and I understand that café does not operate through winter. But we enjoy our visit.

We moved to Westport 5 months ago and it was when we were visiting last year before our move that we first experienced the Denniston Dog. My son (age 11) is a huge fan of their stone-grill, and the atmosphere, and the chips, and the ribs..... and the rest of our family is not far behind! Every visit we receive lovely service from the friendly staff, and we love the food. I have brought out-of-town visitors here, and they have in turn brought their family... can't thank you enough! Great atmosphere and lovely roaring fire.

PortSide Bistro is a busy restaurant in the bustling town of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island in NZ. We major on providing high quality food and service, in a warm and welcoming environment.
Slim pickings for cafes in Westport especially finding one open on Easter Sunday. Luckily we found this little gem. Donât be put off by the slightly tired fixtures and fitting or the dour reception from some of the staff. The menu is really quite exciting. Had food envy looking at the burgers and chicken satay wraps. Finally decided on the fish of the day which was turbot. I decided to go with the pan fried option and it was delicious. It was served with a sundried tomato and basil pesto, (which I ended up scraping off as I felt it was too overpowering for this lovely delicate flavoured fish) salad and delicious fat homemade chips. My husband had the fish trio which consisted of fried fish cakes, salt and pepper calamari and crispy fried prawns with salad. He rated it delicious. He certainly wasnât eager to share. I didnât get the offer of a taste. Was half way through my meal then realised I hadnât taken a photo of our lunch but did find the toilet sign amusing.

We walked here from our lodge which enhanced our experience not to mention we were seriously missing our pets at the time so the pub ownerâs pets touched our hearts. Still, our overall experience was very good because our server (Taren?) and the food were so satisfying. We had the salmon with caper sauce, salad, and chips. We shared. It was terrific! We also fell in love with a beautiful Mastiff and kitten. Hope to return someday.
