The standard at this cafe-restaurant is quite honestly superb. Even a casual glance at the place suggest an attention to detail by the owners that left me highly impressed. The cafe looks like an old NZ railway station cafe suitably redeveloped but there the comparison ends. The front of house person welcomed us warmly, explained the details of the menu for us and the service was prompt with the food well presented. The beef and beer pie represented a new standard of excellence so far as the traditional New Zealand pie goes. I'm not sure what the chef did with the ingredients but I was so impressed I made a point of thanking him personally for his efforts. I'm definitely coming back and for trainspotters there is the added possibility of photographing passing trains as they stop outside. There is truly much to enjoy and appreciate here and the pictures and photographs on the wall provide a history of this railway station going back at least a century.

Try the lamb shank! Although the pitiful miniature slices of zucchini that accompanied the lamb were disappointing, the meat was amazing. The female waitress was friendly and patient, explained everything and was quick to bring the drinks and food out. Friends said the fish & chips was average.
