Five members of our family traveled to Vineland, NJ for a soccer tournament this past week end. After the games on Friday night we wanted to go out for a meal but did not want pizza, fast food or diner food. We asked the very friendly gentleman at the front desk at our hotel for suggestions. He asked us if we like Mexican food, when he saw our faces light up, he laughed and sent us to Millyâs on East Chestnut Street. First, in the interest of full disclosure, let me say that Millyâs is not fancy restaurant, but it is nicely decorated, with colorful paintings on the walls, and simple elegant light fixtures over each table. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. We were not sure of several things listed on the menu, but our server took her time explaining and even asking if we wanted to sample a particular sauce. Millyâs is a Mexican restaurant as well as a Salvadorian restaurant, Puerto Rican restaurant and a Dominican restaurant. Although all of these are Hispanic/Latino cuisines, they are all distinctive, calling for different cooking techniques, ingredients and seasonings. A good Puerto Rican cook may be able to come up with decent Dominican dishes and vice versa, but trying to come up with authentic Mexican or Salvadorian dishes is another story. I have no clue who is in Millyâs kitchen, but whomever it is, they have got it down to a science. We started out with the Nacho Macho with steak. The large presentation that arrived looked very appetizing, but it tasted many times better. The chips, forming the foundation were not from a bag but instead freshly made. They were topped with a fresh Mexican cheese and generous amounts of lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and tender, perfectly seasoned pieces of steak. Absolutely delicious. For our entrees we had a mixture of the various foods. One person ordered the breaded steak, called Milanesa, which came with rice and beans; another had the Bistec Encebollado, steak with onions, which was also accompanied by rice and beans; another had two shrimp and two fish tacos, with guacamole as a side, this was HUGE and absolutely wonderful arriving with plenty of the freshly made chips; another had the shrimp in garlic sauce served with rice and salad. Our youngest member went for a torta, a panini like sandwich of chicken, refried beans, cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato and avocado and pressed to perfection. We also ordered sweet plantains and fried plantains. Everything, without exception was delicious. Our forks were flying from one entrée to the other as we sampled each entrée, nothing disappointed. The meat, shrimp and fish were all properly seasoned, tender and moist, the salads were crispy, nicely coated in a dressing that tasted of lemon juice, vinegar and touch of olive oil. Although we were quite full, we made room for dessert, after all, you must always finish a good meal with something sweet. We opted for carrot cake and flan. The carrot cake was massive, again, flying forks dominated the table. The real surprise was the flan. Not your typical flan sitting in caramel sauce. This was a masterpiece of flan meets scrumptious chocolate cake. I donât know how it is done, since both are made very differently, but it was about an inch of perfect flan, sitting on top of equally perfect chocolate cake, a chocoflan, if you will. Trying to explain it is futile, it has to be tasted to be believed and enjoyed. Millyâs has found a way of presenting four distinctive Latino cuisines, each cooked to perfection, using authentic ingredients, invoking their own distinctive cultures without stepping on each other. In addition, Milly's is very inexpensive. The only negative about Millyâs is that it is almost three hours from our home. We will need to find excuses to travel to Vineland, NJ just so that we can visit Millyâs.

First, the entry way smells of urine. Next, either there are too few self-service ordering kiosks or not intuitive enough. So, after waiting for a while, we decided to order directly at the counter. Person there was a little busy talking with co-workers hanging out at a table nearby and apparently not well trained to take our order correctly.
This whole fried fish is very good when it is freshly cooked. Lots of flavor. They serve this with corn tortilla, rice and beans.
