Las Patronas

Even though reservations were required and we had none, the friendly staff at El Patronas kindly sat us upon arrival. The good selection of Mexican beer added to the great vibes at one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. Throw in a plate of mixed fajitas, excellent hot sauce and a couple more beers and you couldn’t ask for more. The prices were reasonable and the service was outstanding. Our waiter Luis was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the wide array of offerings. Two locations- Almeria and Aguadulce- find one fast, but reserve a table, the place stays packed and it’s easy to see why.

Looking forward to something other than mediocre tapas, my husband and I sought out this place in search of some Mexican food, a little spice and heat. Disappointingly, it's located at the heart of the Centro Commercio in Aguadulce, which we were not prepared for. Although the resort is not as geared up for tourism as nearby Roquetas de Mar it is still full of the lowlifes and filth you'd expect to see on a Saturday evening in Magalluf, not a Monday evening in Aguadulce. Hence our scuttle to the very back of the restaurant, indoors and further away from the neon lights, trashy Garage/Pop music and touts handing out flyers/promises of fluorescent shots. We hoped the food would be as good as the reviews.But.. They do not serve Gin. Or Vodka. Or Cava even.So we plumped for wine. No choice, just red or white and served as the seemingly popular scant approx 130ml serving that we practically downed in three gulps and had to request another within 15 minutes. Our free tapa was a portion of dry tortilla chips with a rather nice, spicy drizzle of sauce but clearly not enough to cover more than three chips. We ordered a tortilla to share. The beef. Tasty enough, if only there'd been more than 2 tablespoons of beef in the darn thing. It was all cheese. The carnitas burritos we ordered seemed full of promise but were brought out on a single wooden board, halved and rather scant portion-wise. Where was the accompanying salad, sauce, guacamole, cheese, soured cream? It looked more like something from Subway. Worse still, it absolutely lacked flavour and the rice was sloppy and wet - like a risotto that has too much liquid and needs to be cooked down a further 10 mins. Bland. Tasteless. Disappointing. That said, the staff are friendly enough and there's some quirky paintings on the wall that raise a snigger or two. As far as Aguadulce goes, with its very limited culinary options this is probably good to some. However, having eaten good, authentic Mexican food ourselves this was nothing more than mediocre to us. Such a shame, as the resort is crying out for more international cuisine options and good quality food.

We had heard very many good reports from friends over the past year or so.We decided to have lunch there today, 5 of us. After a slow start with drinks, we were not disappointed. Tapas so different and so tastefully presented with very acceptable wines. We all had 4 drinks each with tapas and then enjoyed a nice glass of wine on the house.A very nice touch and much appreciated...looking forward to our next visit..
