Had to leave Sunday on business trip. Wanted to go light at lunch stopped at what looked like a new Taco Bell in Ottumwa, Counter person Dana was very good. I placed by order. A couple minutes later a large tatooed kitchen worker slid my tray on the counter and mumbled something. I wasn't sure if it was mine. Finally Dana said it was mine. Older lady working put another customer's tray on the counter and said something you couldn't understand either. No salt and peppeat the condiments stand.
At Taco John's®, we serve traditional Mexican food-with a twist. By fusing bold American flavors with south-of-the-border spice, we've defined our signature menu. From our trademark Potato Olés® and freshly prepared tacos to our infamous breakfast burrito
What can you say bad about Taco John's (other than the cliché fast food staff)? The place has some tasty tacos/burritos and the potato oles are to die for! I've noticed the cost (like everywhere else I suppose) has gone up quite a bit from the late '90s though.

Got there at about 4:30 pm, I was the only one in the restaurant. Service was very good. Salsa was flat w/o much flavor, at leas they have bottled hot sauce, so I added some to get flavor. I ordered the Shrimp and Mushrooms, they came out overcooked somehow, yet only luke warm, I felt they had just heated up something they had already prepared. It lacked flavor. No, I won't go back.
Mexican Restaurant with great flavor, freshly made flour tortillas every day, dishes with authentic flavor.
Burritos Los Roy is the hands down best Mexican restaurant in Ottumwa, and that's saying something!! Service is great, and everything is made from scratch - including all the tortillas, torta buns, salsas, and everything else. Very authentic Northern Mexican cuisine in downtown Ottumwa... a real must try!!
After trying several other Mexican restaurants in town run by Latinos, I took a tip from a local and searched for the converted Dairy Queen on E. Main St. Rather than a heaping combination plate of unexciting items, which I'd been served elsewhere in town, I asked for a couple of "tacos al pastor," a traditional taco that the other restaurants couldn't serve. They came in small corn tortillas -- so-o-o tasty -- with a little grilled onion and half a grilled jalapeño on the side. And this was also the only place in Ottumwa where I could drink horchata, the delicious traditional smoothie of rice, sugar, and Mexican cinnamon. Also, this was the least expensive meal of all the Mexican restaurants I tried. Another way you know it's authentic food: Almost everyone was speaking Spanish. But don't let that put you off; they switch over to English quickly when needed. NICE PLACE!
We were here the night RAGBRAI rolled through last week, and to say the place was packed might have been an understatement. Despite the crowds, every single employee, without exception, even abuela, was smiling, polite and as friendly as the noise and crowds would allow. It took awhile to get drinks and even longer to order dinner, but despite the crush, we got drinks and dinner in about 90 minutes--we were lucky enough to score some seats at the bar (when we left, our name was still on the list for dinner---not sure they ever even used the list!). Had to literally flag down people to place an order, but the service was outstanding and always with a smile! We had a Tequila burrito with shrimp which was okay, and a burrito tapatio. which was better. Chips were nice and warm--the salsa outstanding---and we're from Colorado!I would eat here again next time we're in town. Some of our relatives who live here say it's one of their favorite places to eat in town!

We traveled out of town and came upon this resturant, if you didn't know it was there the outside is deceiving, once inside the place is quite large. The staff was friendly and very accomidating. Generous with the salsa and chips. I had a blue magarita which was the night's special it was good but not exceptional and they didn't have limes. We ordered the steak and shrimp it was excellent, also several other entrees which did not disappoint, a large menu selection. Fair prices. For dissert had refried ice cream it was good but I have had better.
