Riebeek Kasteel's main square can seem pretty bleak on weekdays in winter, so Kasteelberg Bistro's roaring fire was welcome. Sadly, there was no trace of the tapas we'd enjoyed previously and the menu had been drastically cut, presumably because of the time of year. My husband's pasta carbonara was a meagre version of the real thing and my penne arrabiata had parsley substituted for basil. Desserts of apple tart and cheesecake were pretty good. Service was friendly and our wine was good, but the main courses just weren't up to the usual standard.Apologies that our offering was not up to your standard. Of the twelve tapa (starter) items, our six most popular main courses (including beef, chicken, fish and pork) plus the six board specials, we were convinced we've covered all our bases. Clearly not.Not sure what is meant by your description of the pasta carbonara as "meagre" . If it's the portion size, it is our experience that the 250gr of pasta, completely drenched in carbonara sauce is always well received as generous. If you're referring to the recipe, we use bacon instead of imported pancetta, purely from a selling price perspective. Lastly, with reference to the observation that we substituted basil with flat leaf parsley, you are correct but I have to point out that we live in a small village and not all fresh herbs are always readily available.I'm pleased you enjoyed the desserts.
