At Francoâs Osteria, we keep true to the soul of Italian Osterias, whilst providing a contemporary drinking and dining experience. We provide a large selection of regional speciality wines from around Italy in a small, rustic and authentic setting. Alongs
Word has got round about Franco's on Hove seafront near the old King Alfred's Leisure Centre, so it's essential to book of an evening or you'll be turned away - it doesn't take many to fill the place,.which has a buzzy, funky, down-home vibe without the need for the usual overbearing pop music to attempt "atmosphere". Franco himself is in the thick of things and is dead serious about what he does - and some have found his attitude arrogant and dictatorial. That's possibly because he's proud of his standards, and the format is what it is - and he has little patience with those who don't "get it". It's an Osteria, not a restaurant... The format, then, is quite rigid: you have antipasti, pasta and mains (with a specials board) More than two people have to take a sharing menu - two sizes, two prices. The bigger option at £28.50 brings you all the antipasti on the board, a couple of pasta dishes and a main of either fish or meat, a delicious array of dishes arriving one after the other, whatever it is they're preparing that night.. In a sense, you put yourself in their hands - you'll probably have to ask if you want to know what the meat or the fish are, but unless you eat like a horse you won't go hungry. And the flavours! The produce is clearly of the highest quality and everything has a depth of flavour that is quite stunning, on top of which lovely notes of lemon, mint and herbs dance across the palate. On this recent occasion, with four of us opting for the meat, an odd note was struck by a plate containing four pieces of steak, four pieces of sausage, yet three lamb chops - so someone went short. The steak was rump, which if you don't mind chewy meat, was flavoursome, but I find it too much like hard work. .Another criticism would be that a bottle of Puglian red wine (a Primitivo - also known as Zinfandel elsewhere) was of distinctly average quality, and at £33, overpriced, when for example, there is an excellent Primitivio di Manduria at Waitrose, with balance, structure, complexity and length for about £11.They could buy something like this in and sell it on at £33 a bottle, for a better food pairing.and a handsome mark-up. Having said this, it was great evening, in what felt like an authentic atmosphere, the busy kitchen in plain view producing a cornucopia of wonderfully vibrant dishes of an altogether different standard than the usual high street Italian restaurants.good afternoon.thank you for taking your time to leave us your comment as we always value all constructive comments.i would like to take this opportunity to clear few points that you kindly mention.1 i am sorry if you and others may have the feeling that i come across a bit rude but honestly this is me as black and white as you can get.2 yes we are an Osteria and not a restaurant or Brighton trending restaurants. My philosophy is very simple good quality, healthy rustic food.3 Wine . i understand that you can find primitivo wine in Tesco or any others superstore. All my wine are from a small supplier in London who served only top end restaurants in London and unfortunately its not cheap as its wine are the best of the best in my opinion to the point that they got the power to decide who to serve. On the web now days there is and app call vi vino where you can check the quality of the wine and the retail price and please i would like to invite you to have a look it as it will help you to understand a lot of about quality and cost.In restaurants, osteria , bistro or and hospitality business the formula of pricing its simply one : supplier cost time 3.5 of 4 and unfortunately i must follow so other wise i will have no business and i really hope you can understand and appreciate.again you will see that i am undercharging.thank you so much and i really hope to see you soon.

Mekan Charcoal Grill & Meze is a Hove based restaurant bringing you to unique tastes from Turkish, Mediterranean and Cypriot Cuisine.
Despite having been advised that Mekan - which had briefly gone through an incarnation as âFishmekanâ - was seemingly a successor to the excellent Makara restaurant, once from further down Church Road in Hove, this was our first venture inside. Why the delay?⦠Well, the location has, over recent years, been the host of a number of ill-fated ventures and there was a worry this might prove the same. Immediately on entering, we realised that worry was unnecessary - the place, at 8pm on a Saturday night, was full and clearly the attendees were all enjoying themselves. The menu is extensive but we made some well-worn choices and were delighted to find the standard of Makara had been maintained. A minor downside is that the one-room restaurant is vast and the extremely high ceiling and lack of absorbent furnishings makes for perhaps an over-noisy ambience but the sound of exuberance wins over library-style silence for me any day. Mekan is now firmly on the ârevisit soonâ list.

We visited last week for lunch. It's not in the greatest location in Hove, but a high google rating led us there! Rustic decor, lovely atmosphere, fantastic food. Guiseppe looked after us well and we enjoyed the set menu. Excellent value for money, cosy atmosphere, great service and really good food means that we will definitely visit again!

Café Quench is a licensed café/bar and restaurant with a 5 star food hygiene rating. Try our "street food" menu, from which you can order takeaways. We serve: breakfasts, snacks, sandwiches, lunches, dinners, Sunday roasts (booked), speciality coffees etc
Really hard to fault, service was great, food was amazing and prices extremely reasonable. I ordered the pancakes with bacon and pineapple but they were out of pancakes so instead he made me French toast. It was absolutely amazing and very generous portions, unfortunately I wouldn't finish it all. Would definitely recommend and would definitely return!

Semola is an authentic Italian restaurant offering fresh homemade pasta with a specific pasta machine and all homemade desserts. The management of the restaurant is organized by an Italian family.
Popped in on the off chance on a rainy Saturday night having heard mixed reviews. Were welcomed immediately and given a great not too noisy table in the window. Lovely atmosphere - casual but smart type bistro feel, modern and clean. Extensive authentic pasta menu which lived up to expectations and we are hard to please! - really appreciated the extra touches - big bowl of olives at no charge came with the drinks, water served in individual jugs with slice of lemon. Generous side salad (not the usual mean variety other restaurants serve). Crispy generous portion of garlic bread. Very reasonably priced too. We will return!
