I'm glad I gave this restaurant a try despite a few recent negative reviews on TripAdvisor. Frankly, I don't know what those people were talking about because our visit was great! While the store front is a little hard to find, once you're there the parking is ample and the food good. My family ate dinner for all of $23. We left full (perhaps over full) and happy. The food was good and tasty, and the service prompt. Give it a try.

The Tortuga (Turtle) restaurant was recommended to us by the Monterey Bay Aquarium staff after a 2 hour personal tour with some fish feeding along the way (highly recommended BTW)! The young ladies who led the tour were passionate and knowledgable. I figured I'd ask one more question before we said goodbye -- "Where can we get a good Mexican Lunch". The answer was Tortuga in Seaside CA (about a 10 minute drive from the aquarium). It was Sunday afternoon and the unassuming restaurant was filled with Latino families who were clearly having a great time. It's a family run operation and they also have home-baked goods. You can order at the counter or at a table. The menu includes some spectacular soups which are served in large turines. They seem to be well known for their tortas (sandwiches) and burritos. They have classic enchilada dishes with rice and beans. While this wasn't the most delicious Mexican food I've ever had, it was quite good. And I loved the family atmosphere and friendly staff. This is about as far as you can get from Taco Bell -- this is real Mexican cuisine!

We usually get take out from Zarape at least 2-3 times a month. We enjoy the big burritos, tacos & fajitas. Always consistent & quick service. Enjoy chips & salsas while you wait!

This place is a little market that sell meat, fruits and burritos, tacos etc. We visited this place on a Saturday night and they close at 9 pm. We got there just in time. Order a chicken burrito with natural juice. The fruit juice are mango, papaya and mix fruits. The mango juice was gone by the time we got there so I chose the mix fruits juice. By the way, since the juice was in a cold container, they don't add ice to your cup to water it down. That is a plus on my end. The burritos were juicy and big. I wanted to order the fry talapia fish but they ran out. Overall the food was delicious and you will not be sorry.

I was with a friend on a casual visit to Monterey. We ate lunch here. Now, it was perfect for what we were looking for...good food, good price, casual atmosphere. We couldn't finish our food, the portions were big. Now, I would have been disappointed in the ambiance, had I come here for dinner with my husband. This restaurant was coming up as #2 in Monterey for Mexican food. Again, for our purposes, it worked out just fine and I would eat there again but if you are looking for ambiance...I wouldn't rank this high in there regard. Nice people though!
