Puerto Rican food is always a rear & hard to find in this area of NJ. Cocina Candela is a lovely restaurant with wonderful tropical decor & a very welcoming staff. We wholeheartedly agree with the rave review of empanadas, loved the special gazpacho & the mofongo & the chicken "chicharron". We savored the generous pork shank "pernil". The red snapper was also well done although a native mojo sauce would be preferable. The "arroz con gandules" was cooked well but was very bland. We will return.

I really wanted to give Casa Piquin 3 1/2 stars because it is, in my opinion, somewhere between average and very good (TripAdvisor, how about including a "good" choice?). This is a subterranean restaurant that used to be a popular Italian place years ago. The room is showing its age, but Casa Piquin has done its best to create a festive south of the border atmosphere. The service was excellent the night we were there; three different servers were all friendly, helpful, and efficient. The food was good (though true aficionados may quibble over certain of the offerings) and in ample portions. I had tamales and my wife enchiladas after starting with quesadillas. The meals are served with rice and beans. The chips and salsa on the table were quite tasty. It is a BYOB (there is a liquor store a few doors down), and for those who don't know Montclair, parking can be a bit of a challenge. All in all our meal was satisfying. There are other Mexican restaurants in Essex County which are of a higher quality (artisan tacos and the like), but if you find yourself on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair with an urge for Mexican food, Casa Piquin isn't bad.

The place is nicely laid out. The food is pretty much like diner food so if that's your thing it will be fine. Dining there on a Tuesday evening with 5 other people not one of us was particularly thrilled with the food. A few people ordered entrees with skirt steak. Not one of them enjoyed the steak. Fish, chicken, pork...it was all okay. As mentioned earlier, it's diner food served in a setting with large screen tv's all set to sports channels. So if that's your thing give the place a try. For me, and the others in my party, we'll not be going back. And the clincher for me ( which has nothing to do with the mediocrity of the food) was we charged a corkage fee of $5 because we brought our own wine. I told the server I had called to ask if the place was BYOB and was told that it is. Their website indicates it's BYOB. I wasn't told there was a corkage fee nor is that indicated on the website. It turns out you can buy wine by the bottle at the place. The wine is from a NJ winery. And yes, you can bring your own bottle; however, there is a corkage fee. I told the server the corkage fee is not pointed out on their website and nobody told me about the fee when I called. she said she'd speak to her boss about not charging the fee. The bottom line...the fee was on the bill.So I'll summarize...the food is mediocre, the is no disclosure of a corkage fee, and sports channels on large screen tv's surround you. I'll not be going back, my friends will not be going back and I'll certainly not recommend this place to family members and other friends.

The empanadas are delicious. So many choices for vegetarians as well. They are crispy and flaky. The ones I loved were the vegetarian choices of mushroom medley, maduros and cheese and the ricotta spinach ones. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

4 friends out to dinner. Very noisy; tough to dialogue. We each ordered 4 tacos. Nobody (including me) felt they would order the same tacos again. The service was average. The price ($6/taco) was a bit steep, considering that 2 tacos do NOT make a meal (they are unusually small). We wouldn't order any $26 entree in THIS place.

Very long wait, no system to notify when it is your turn, loud music, dirty plates, filthy bathrooms, we had to ask numerous time for water. Food is very tasty, and portions are big, The rest needs a lot of improvement. People are standing all over waiting for their turn. The waters are not trained well, when we just set at the table the waiter sprayed cleaner all over the table and our clothes to clean the table, then when taking plates off the table the oil and sauce from food were flying all over us too. We took the remaining food back home and found long black hair on the plate, none has long black hair in our family:( not sure that tasty food overwrite all the filthy moments

Very very good. Different cuisine. The fries and cod appetizer. Try the Peruvian chicken shrimp rice and stir fry veggies dish. The rice pudding desert a ten. Great service. Nice atmosphere. BYOB. On and out for about $85 a couple all in. Worth every penny. Enjoy. Beware parking is a bit of a challenge so b prepared to search, find, and walk a bit. Especially Friday or Saturday nights.
