Things to do in Monroe
Monroe is a town I pass through on my way up and back along Hwy2. El Rey is one of those nondescript places in a strip mall that I thought I would take a chance on. Been there twice now and it is excellent. On my most recent visit I had the Chicken Enchiladas in Mole sauce. The Mole was one of the best I've had. They have a varied menu that I am looking forward to trying more of. The people are nice and the service is quick. I can't say it's the best in Monroe since I haven't tried much else there. What I can say is that if you hungry of real Taqueria style Mexican and want to get back on the road you should be happy!

Located in a strip mall behind Fred Meyer, this unassuming little place is serving the best Mexican food around. There was an older Mexican lady in the kitchen smiling at us while she was making incredible looking Sopes. The menu was really interesting with dishes that simply aren't available at other Mexican restaurants. There's even lengua and cabezas as menu choices. There's Huarache. We decided on shredded pork Sopes and Ceviche Tostadas made with lime cured shrimp. When our food was served, the waitress also brought four homemade salsas in individual bowls. One was complex but hot enough to start wildfires. I loved it.The Sopes shells were large and handmade and amazing. This place should be standing-room only. I think we liked La Bamba.
