Jose's Mexican Cantina

Reviewed By Paul D

After a movie, I was undecided about what I wanted to eat. So I started driving towards an area with a bunch of restaurants when I started thinking, maybe Mexican. I decided that if I found a parking space, I would try Jose's. I had been to the place in more than a decade. Found a spot and went in. Granted it was a Monday night, but he place was nearly empty. Back in the day, they were lined up outside and I suppose that says it all. When Jose's Cantina opened about 20 years ago, Mexican food was not that common and Americans up North were not very familiar. A lot has changes in 20 years. The arrival of so many Mexicans to the area means that there is a lot more Mexican food available. Americans have also become more familiar and discriminating about Mexican food. Unfortunately, Jose's hasn't kept pace with those changes. I started with a cup of chicken soup, which was good enough, but except for the garnish of tired cilantro, it didn't taste particularly Mexican. The salsa that was served with the chips was innocuous and bland. I ordered the chimichanga with chicken and salsa verde, It arrived promptly with a slice of some sort of cheese (it's square shape was still intact) just barely melted over the top with refried beans to one side and rice with two slices of anemic tomatoes and a lone half of canned black olive on the other - oh, and there were a few slices of pickled jalapenos too. The filling was unremarkable and bland and there was no sign of the salsa verde. Seriously? The prices are not cheap either. I'm just glad I didn't order anything more expensive, because I probably would have been really angry. This place is just plain tired - they clearly don't care any more. That's why it's a prime candidate for Kitchen Nightmares! C'mon Gordon!
