Arrived at 14:10. Despite hours posted on a sign in the window and online, indicating that they are open until 14:30, they were already closed for lunch. There were no other signs indicating an unexpected emergency or other reason for being closed. This was profoundly irritating after an hour long drive to go there. Be forewarned that their posted hours may not be accurate.

Toro Robata Sushi

Decided to try this new joint on a Friday night. Decor was modern, with a beautiful, even though it's plastic, sakura tree in the middle of the restaurant. There was a mix of seats with cushion, and others without. We opted for seats with cushions due to bad backs. For entree, we ordered to share the takoyaki (deep fried octopus balls) and agedashi tofu. I always order both these dishes as a standard to compare other Jap restaurants. The takoyaki was one of the best I've had, the outside firm but inside gooey, just how it's supposed to be. The dashi broth in the tofu was the highlight, complimented really well. For mains, we ordered to share salmon tataki salad, grilled eel nigiri and grilled pork belly. The salmon tataki salad is the most beautiful salad I've ever seen. Portion is generous with a huge variety of raw vegetables used, dressed with a lovely dressing and includes 6-7 pieces of raw salmon pieces lightly charred on the outside. The chef even used raw carrots and raw pumpkin to create flowers for decoration - talk about edible "flowers"! It was a very pretty dish. The grilled eel nigiri was spectacular as well, at $5 a piece it was worth it. It was served on a plate probably too huge for what's on it, with a side of pickled ginger, wasabi, radish, and beetroot mainly for dips with the nigiri. The grilled pork belly was probably my least favourite - the pieces were served on skewers and the meat was a little tough/chewy. There wasn't much of charcoal smell or taste either, when they were supposedly grilled over charcoals. Note also that the restaurant is BYO and does not serve alcohol (no sake tonight!). The waiters tell me that they are in the process of applying for their liquor license. Instead, we ordered a pot of hot green tea to share, and thankfully it's not a tea bag! It's actually tea leaves with Japanese rice. Hallelujah! The reason I hadn't given it 5 stars is because of the way the dishes were rushed out to our table. I specifically asked for the hot starters to come out first as entrée, but the salmon tataki salad arrived first, followed very quickly by both the hot starters. I immediately asked the waitress to stop the rest of the dishes coming out as we couldn't eat them all at once (we didn't want the hot food to get cold), plus there was no more room on our table to put anything else anyway. Shortly after, a different waiter came to ask if he can put the next dish somewhere on our table, and I said no! I told him I had communicated twice before to other waiters to stop the mains coming out, as we were nowhere close to finishing our hot starters as well as the salad main that came out too early. He understood and made sure that happened. He also said the chefs were rushing the food out because they were very busy. I didn't accept this explanation - that's really bad planning. In a way, I wonder if the tough pork belly skewers suffered in quality because the chefs had to recook/reheat it? At the end of our meals, we were asked if we wanted some dessert like green tea ice cream. We were not planning to have dessert but it sounded so good we ordered one each. To the waitress' embarassment, she came back and said the kitchen was already closed. Goodness me, to wet our appetite for dessert then having to come back and tell us no can do because you didn't know the kitchen was closed?Apart from the above food dramas, the quality of the food has been superior. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu.

Sakura Sushi

We visited Sakura Sushi based on the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. The highlight of the meal was the popcorn prawn (very light and crunchy), otherwise everything else was fairly mediocre. The assorted tempura bento box was heavily battered while the maki roll was fine but nothing to write home about. The sushi rice on the roll was also mushy. The quality is similar to what you would get in a food court.

Nice fresh lunch, very filling! Great selection and take away available. It was quite busy for one staff member serving out front and she managed well but it meant each table got serviced only once.Really nice meals!
